The first few levels will be spent trying to regroup with your men. Over time you work your way up to 12 men, 6 men at any one time.

but what's going to happen if the krauts kill your men? is your squad going to be reinforced by new replacements or are you going to have to restart the level and play it again over and over until you pass it without your men being killed?

If a man is crucial to the plot of the story, he will be injured, rather than killed. If a man is injured, he is out for a mission or two. Men with little significance to the story can be killed and are gone for the duration of the campaign. However, overtime they will be replaced by reinforcements.

also, druing the campaign, when you take control of a tank, it replaces one squad of your men...meaning you can still have either the assault or surpess team and a tank. Very cool way of the devs letting you take over a battle I think.
