    Is there one around?

I'm interested in how to make scrolling Credits, how to put text on the screen (not True Type, but like from a TGA for so many frames and use alpha blending/alpha channel).

What programs are used other than Virtual Dub and Fraps?

Camera "Shake" affects, that kind of thing.

    Also about resolution (ratio).

This really confuses me as TV ratios are different than PC ratios.

    1024x768 is a PC 4:3
    768x420 is a TV 4:3 wierd.

    I don't get this.

What resolution must my video be "on screen" to play correctly on TV (16:9 and 4:3).

How do I resize/pad the video or whatever so my TV knows to letterbox?

I can sort of do video editing for DV, but using PC video source is very new to me.

    tolwyn.com,

I suggest you lurk around a bit and register at the Virtual War Cinema to get many answers to your questions. The VWC is a web site dedicated to virtual film-making:

    hi tolwyn,

credits, text-animation and other effects demand a video-edit program. some simple ones are free (like windows movie-maker), some are low cost and some are expensive... i prefer "adobe premiere", you will find others been discussed here also.

    as for tv and monitor:
don't get confused, it's very different!
the compressed video, you probably want to create, are multimedia for pc most likely. if you want to get results for tv-output optimized, you should tape your final cut on dv or vhs (which is quite a different task then).
in general: multimedia-videos have square pixels, are progressive (means all frames are full size) and frame-rate and -size are as you wish. dv and vhs are standards, also depending on your countries tv-standard (pal or ntsc). means: dv for example has a frame-size of 720x576 (similar to non-square pixels), "framerate" of ntsc is 29.976 (!), pal 25 - both are interlaced frames (which means the videosignal is splitted in top- and bottom-fields, representing pair and unpair lines). when you watch interlaced video on your computer-screen, the (software-)player merges both halves to one, watching progressive "computer"-video on tv requires hardware tv-output.

if you want to optimize your multimedia-edits for eventual tv-output, you might chose a resolution of 800x600 (which is best for most grafics-device tv-out) and a frame-rate of 30fps (if tv-standard is ntsc, like in usa) or 25fps (if pal, like in europe) since more and more dvd-players are able to play divx-compressed files, you may soon be able to use both tv and monitor output more easily.
another possibility is to compress into any vcd/svcd-format, which can be played by most dvd-players. unfortunately the files are less quality and even bigger than mpeg4-compressed (like divx or wmv9)
