I had a look at the Fleet Type Submarine Online site a little while ago - if you haven't seen it do have a look. One of the interesting things I found was a manual on the Fleet Type boats. It has a lot of interesting stuff in it for the technical types, but also some bits on things like patrol routine. One thing that was mentioned was the routine for surfacing: the boat would be brought to 50 feet, then 40 feet to do radar sweeps before surfacing. Obviously, this depth ws enough for the radar antenna to emerge and do a sweep. I thought I'd try it on my next patrol, so I gave it a go. I brought my boat up to 40 feet and, sure enough, I got a radar signal. Something to have a go at...

You can bind a key to SnorkelDepth, and set it to be radar depth, too. TM does this (since US boats didn't use Snorkels).

The antennae is located on a pole just aft of the periscope shears and yes, at 40 feet of depth it sticks up out of the water enough to track targets. Only problem is, at that depth you are very visible from above. I've been bombed into the stoneage for hanging around and looking at the pretty contacts on the scope.

wolferz: you're right, you can't hang about. I noticed how visible you are too. A quick scan - anything shows up get down again and stay down until you can get a visual is the way I play it.

I've found that 45 feet is good enough to get the radar running, but that could be just the SD radar.

Right you are. The SD turns on automaticly at about 45 feet, but you need to be at 39 feet(38 in rough seas) in order to be able to get the SJa to turn on.
