Thread: Suggestion for the simultaneous attack system... | Forums

    Huellllloooo there people!!!

I'm just another veteran Heroes fan awakening from the deep long slumber over the otherwise bleak future of the series.

First off, I really, really am excited over Heroes V and I do have high hopes for Nival and Ubi...and needless to say I LOVE the 3D engine!
I don't necessarily play Etherlords(well I tried it once but I find it too tough) but I fell in love with its stunning art and graphics...so I am glad that they are implementing the similar engine and art direction to Heroes! Well done!

Hmm, yeah, actually, the reason why I write this thread is that I happen to get a bright idea you hardcore freaks might like. I see that many people here have been arguing over whether H4's simultaneous attack system be applied to H5 or not...well, I've been thinking about it and all I can say is that I've liked both H3's first come first strike system and H4's.

BUT what if we can make a twist in the upcoming combat system by having the 'first come first strike' be the default system WHILE the simultaneous attack system can be applied as a creature SKILL? Let's say we call it as engage skill. I would imagine there should be a handful of creatures that will possess the skill, and that will make them more special and efficient units. I would personally think of creatures like wolves, hellhounds, crusaders, vampires, nagas and ogres (mainly 'savage' and 'brave' creatures) as good 'engager' units.

So...what do you ppl think?? I think it's gonna be really 'smart' if the next system actually go into this direction.

I hope they tinker with a number of different approaches to that and do lots of playtesting to determine which one works the best. I think the way the had it in Heroes 4 where similtaneous combat occurs unless the attacker has the first strike ability (a la Master of Magic) was the most logical approach - if they don't go back to how it was in Heroes 3, which they may do if they want to more completely recapture the traditional Heroes feel. Which I actually think most people would like the best, though one of the few things I liked about Heroes 4 was that it was much more difficult to simply go plowing through stacks of wandering monsters without any attrition whatsoever. Similtaneous ranged fire, tough, no...

Wow, I really like that idea of yours, abivalentvince! I say that this approach both recaptures the "traditional Heroes feel" while keeping some of the newer mechanics...perhaps this could satisfy both sides of the H3/4 squabble??
