Thread: Windows 7 Flight sim performance. | Forums

  1. #1
I've been running Windows 7 64 bit in a dual boot configuration alongside Windows XP (32). So far I really like it, and haven't had any troubles with anything I've tried yet including all my sim hardware (Saiteks, CH stuff, TrackIR etc). It does seem a lot like Vista - but a bit less resource intensive/higher performance.

I've done some basic benchmarks comparing XP 32 to Windows 7 64 in Black Shark, FSX, and IL-2.

I'm about to install the beta too. What did you do about compatible video drivers?

Also, for comparision, I would like to see a Vista 64 benchmark included.

Thanks for taking the trouble EcoDragon!

It does look like M$ has learned it's lesson from the Vista disaster.

Nvidia has a win7 beta driver up on windows update but windows 7 uses the same driver model as vista so any drivers for vista will work just fine for 7, just install using vista compatibility mode (only reason is to avoid (unsupported OS message).

There have been some issues with the 180 series drivers. It's easy enough to try something and revert, but there is an nVidia driver available in Windows update that will run well.

I am running the 178 series WDDM 1.1 that nVidia provided for Windows 7 without issues.

You have TrackIR version 3 or 4 I suppose, as Versions 1 & 2 unsupported with Vista x64 at present/forever?

    Yes, TrackIR 3 Pro.

That is unfortunate news about TIR1 and 2.

Got Windows 7 (64-bit) Installed, with NVidia board, Raid and Video drivers. Using the 181.20 beta video drivers. Also, got my X52 and TrackIR drivers going. All looks good, except IL-2. I just ran a couple of tracks. The frame rates showed as 40-60+ (normal for me) but looked really jumpy. It also looked like it did not get the right NVidia profile. I will do a bit more testing over the next few days and post results.

Oh, I forgot, the Hyperlobby install seems to stall out. I couldn't get it to finish.

IL-2 runs perfectly fine on my install, though as I said, I'm running the WDDM1.1 drivers that are for Win 7 (get them through windows update).

As for the HL issues, you need to run the HL setup in Win 98 compatibility mode. There is also (partial) fix for the the HL skin issue that you will see once you get it installed:
