Thread: Before I turf LOMAC | Forums

    Hi,

I'm going to go on a little rant here so please bear with me. My first sim experience was on the old Timex-Sinclair ZX-70 back in 1980 and since then I've played just about every sim out there.

To make a long story boring, I tried to get LOMAC to work for over five hours last night. It's patched to ver 1.02. Granted, the manual sucks but the following happens all the time:

-Unable to get target lock or lock next target to work more than once in a row.

-When using the Aim-7 or AIM-9, the targeting reticle is intermittent even when the target is locked.

-Firing guns on any aircraft with the joystick trigger results in one long burst until the gun is empty. I have to remap the trigger to another button to fix it.

-When firing Mavericks with a good lock, only 1 out of ten shots actually tracks properly even after I increase the missile effectiveness slider.

-When fighting air-to-air when using the easy radar mode (thought it might work at least), the radar range scale decreases as the targets get closer but then it's impossible to increase the range.

-The only targeting function that works consistently is the one that targets the enemy closest to the center of my HUD but even then the weapons rarely lock.

-Afterburners engage at will, even when I'm at idle.

There are lots more but you get the idea.

I suspected it might be my joystick (Wingman Etreme 3D) but the problems particularly with targeting occur even when I use the keyboard commands. Apart from wearing out too quickly when I play handle twist intensive games and generally needing frequent recalibration, it's stable with all my other sims.

For all that the sound and graphics work properly. The game looks and sounds great but it's still unplayable.

If anyone can suggest anything, great, otherwise I'm goin' skeet shootin'! For the life of me I've never encountered such a buggy product, except maybe Jetfighter V.

    Thanks,

    Sillius_Sodus

P.S. Since I first posted this, I see that I am not the only one with these types of problems. I'm still open to suggestions though.

Dont give up Sillius, Lockon is a real nice Sim just takes a little time to get used to.

Mavericks - known v1.02 bug, missile effectiveness slider must be at 50% or 100% otherwise Mavericks always miss.
Can't help with easy radar troubles, as I dont use it. Recommend not using it, fly missions with a friendly AWACS and it will tell ya where the bad guys are.

Sometimes it is tough to get target lock if the bad guys are jamming.

Once you do lock them up, they will try and lose your lock by beaming you, plus using chaff/flares. With IR missiles like the AIM-9, I like to get in closer and if he's dropping constant flares, I watch the timing of his flare releases and fire between them.

PS. ...I have a very gweat fwend in Wome called...etc

Sorry Death, you lose! It was Professor Plum....

    Thanks Brit_Radar_Dude,

I get target lock problems even when I go after trucks with Mavericks. I didn't know trucks could jam. Oh well, I'll just have to strafe their asses. It's also a problem in A2A no matter what the targeted aircraft type is. Enemy jamming and/or coutermeasures I can live with, even enjoy. I just wish the program would work better. As soon as I'm done here I'm going to sacrifice a couple of 5.25" floppies to the patch gods...

I miss the gang from DID. EF2000, now THAT was a sim. Too bad it's not written for OpenGL. On my old Diamond Monster video card (4MB!) it was the best looking game ever. 'Course you young'uns probably don't remember stuff like Voodoo or 3DFX.

I'm still trying to figure out the realistic radar in LOMAC, the manuals are just so poor. I can hold my own in a close in fight without radar but you can't live very long without a decent BVR capability against the AI.

Your gweat fwend in Wome, that wouldn't be Mr ****us would it? If it is pwease say hewwo to his wovwy wife Incontinentia for me.

    Ok,

I'm going to give LOMAC another go. I've spent the last couple of weeks playing Strike Fighters so now that my jet cravings have been reduced, I'll have the patience to make LOMAC work.

I've noticed that everyone says you nee 1Gb of ram and a ripsnorting video card to play but I'm not encountering any problems on my system:

    P4 2.8Gb
    512 Megs of ram
MSI video card, 128 Mb, Nvidia 5200 chipset
    Vanilla Soundblaster sound card

I run it with most of the video settings at the second highest level, heat blur and canopy reflections off and it's still a very nice looking sim.

    Good hunting,
