It is true that the ladders cannot be smoothly used. There is not much you can do. The ladders in single player are not too bad but the MP ladders are murder.
One trick is to back off the top of the ladder so you fall in mid air, then use the forward key to catch yourself before you hit bottom and sustain damage.
If I know there is health nearby and I have a full bar i just jump off and power up at the bottom.
TY ScoopsI do seem to have better luck backing up, and then going down. I've never tried the "grab thing", but I will.
