Can anyone tell me if this package...
    http://www.dabs.com/ProductView.aspx?Quicklinx=48Y5&Cat...6216,50595&I nMerch=1
is suitable for skinning? I have read posts which mention Paint Shop Pro but this one is called Paint Shop Pro Photo. Does that mean it can only be used with photographs? Would it still work with the .bmp images we have in the game? Thanks.

After looking at their information I cant tell if this supports layers or not which is a key in doing Skinning.

Here is a link to the product you posted:

If it was me, I'd just get the Paint Shop Pro X which is more what you need. I have the Paint Shop Pro 9.

    Good luck! <div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I have and use PSP8. I got mine from amazon.com for around $25. The learning curve is not all that steep and wont set you back in cash what Photoshop would.

You can download a trial version then upgrade and buy the full program through the link Jade posted for you.

This may be the best way to do it because skinning isn't for everyone.

Of course there is always Gimp which is Free, Should you chose to go that route the learning curve will be steeper than PSP.

I wish you luck and welcome you to the addiction <div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Thanks for the advice guys. I've decided to go with PSP9. I tried GIMP a couple of days ago but quickly "fell off" the steep learning curve and hurt my brain . With a bit of luck I might do better with PSP9. Cheers.

I'll bear that in mind Chuck in case Amazon let me down, which they have done several times in the past. Does Elements have everything you need for skinning, thats all I'd be using it for?

I really wouldn't know what Elements lacks. I have a friend who is quite good with PhotoShop, and he calls it "elephants", but he's seen me work with it, and he didn't really see what the difference was in regard to the tools I use for skinning. There's no animation provision that I can see, but so what. I think that there's probably more fonts and brush tools in the full version of PhotoShop, but I also bet that if I want to, I can download more fonts and brush tools. I'm really not qualified to say what Elements is lacking, that the the full version has, but it's letting me look like I know what I'm doing. I had to get BRIGHT though, otherwise there were simply too many colors.

here's what my Elements looks like:

That's a template I'm massaging a little. I can do whatever I want with layers, the mouth is hand-drawn using several seperate layers merged together, the tiger is copied from another template as is the roundels, and the green is custom mixed using color filters and effects to make the olive drab I was looking for. The text can be wrapped and skewed, as can any other selection. I have no straight line tool icons, but if you click a brush tool to the layer, and then click another place on the layer with the shift key down, it makes a straight line no problem. Seems to have anything I could need, I can save as many types of format, from tga to jpeg to bmp to many others, I can choose to manage colors as several types of format and depth. I tried Gimp and while I actually made some stuff for work with it, it drives me mad

Elements seems to do the job OK. I've been playing with it for about 7 months although I admit I took some computer graphics stuff in college. That was for Mac though, thank God I don't have to deal with Pantone colors here! But I think the results make Elements a good choice for skinning, I don't know why it's overlooked. results look OK to me:

Congrats!!! Soon you too will be bitten by the skinbug. Once bitten, there is NO CURE! Your in for the long haul and it's very addictive once you see the results of your work. I can tell you ther more I mess with skinning, the better I do my stuff and get this, I actually get faster at it too.
You have been warned.... <div class="ev_tpc_signature">

@ Chuck...thanks for the info, its handy to know that Elements does everything skinners need. The order I've got in with Amazon has a 1 to 2 week delivery estimate, which is often a bad sign, thats why I'm interested in what Elements does. BTW, that P-40 skin looks cool. You hand drew that mouth with a mouse? It turned out really well.

@ JadehawkII...I think I've already been bitten. I didnt get too far with GIMP but far enough to see the potential. The main thing I like about the user made skins I've downloaded, apart from the increased detail, is the way that the markings look as though they are part of the aircraft as opposed to just "floating" next to the skin. There are some real artists among the skinners.

The hand drawn parts were made with multiple layers, which eases the process considerably. It requires a little skill, but it's not so hard to get the hang of after a few tries
