Thread: Official Dedicated Server Information Thread | Forums

  1. #1
I created this thread to post information regarding the dedicated server that we have been able to find out in order to help server admins with setting up their servers.

This is the information that has been "discovered" by the community as the result of one member obtaining a copy of the game prior to release and give us information about it. Unfortunately no one from UBI or RSE has been willing give the community even the most basic of inforation except one screen of the dedcated server status window. This stance has forced the community to gather information in an attempt to gather infomation to prepare to host servers in anticipation of Lockdown's release. Thanks goto noobless1981 and DjTom_I for digging a lot of the following info.

    What we know so far:

    1) A compatible graphics adapter IS required inorder to launch the dedicated server application. If you are a team that owns their own dedicated box, you will have to make arrangements to have a compatible video card installed prior to hosting. A short list of compatible cards:
    â· ATIâ® RADEONâ® 8500/9000/X families
â· NVIDIAâ® GeForce" 3/4/FX/6/7 families (GeForce 4 MX cards are NOT supported)

    2) The dedicatded server status/startup screen is used when starting up the server and it looks like a picture of this screen was release by Gieger earlier:

Then you will use configuration screen to configure the server:

It looks as if the configuration is limited. Just the basics server config you can see â€" LAN/UBI.com, Game type, # of players and rounds, maps, etc. No option for restriction kits or allowed/disallowed weapons items or attachments. This means unless someone finds it, the grenade launcher and hi-cap mags will not be able to be removed from game play.

This information is stored in an .nds file (if you save it) that looks like this:

You can see the information is the same as the previous screen just in a text file. The passwords have been X’d out by me, but are shown when you look at the file.

    3) Server admins must apparently create separate UBI accounts for each server that they wish to run on the internet. For example if you want to run 2 servers you will need to create UBI.com user accounts like MYSERVER1 and MYSERVER2 in order to host 2 servers. LAN server appear to not require UBI accounts, however there is some confusion regarding needing multiple GUID’s if hosting with a DS and playing on another cpu. If anyone can clarify please let us know.

    Things I’m unsure of.
After trying to host 2 servers on the same CPU I am not sure if it will be possible to host multiple servers on the same machine. (I attempted this on a LAN) I say this primarily because of the IP address that is issued for both servers is the same (192.168.254.1) and in the .nds file there is no line to specify IP address and port. So I am assuming they are both running on the same default port. I did some research into the Ghost Recon servers and they utilized the GSLauncher to be able to specify the IP address that the servers will run on. I’m not sure if will require it but I am inquiring around.

Additionally since I have not been able to join a server that I have tried to host yet, I cannot verify the presence or absence of a between round timer. This may be the Auto-Launch setting you can see in the first screen. But like I said I cannot even see the servers I try to host so I cannot join them (LAN or UBI.com) to find out. Anyone who can confirm this please let us know.

That’s it for now. Everyone trying to play with the server set up post your findings here.

    Thanks.

I know that I am getting a Chicken Little rep for all my Doom Saying posts here, but this just DOES not look good.

I know that there are several times a week that I have trouble logging on to my UBI account thru the game.

If the actual Game Server is going to be at the mercy and whim of a simple UBI Account, then I cannot see how we can possibly have reliable dedicated servers.

can someone clear a few questions up?

    1. if we have a DS, i assume we will have to upload all the files to the server (about 4gigs). or does it require installation from the disc?

    2. does the DS need a CD in the drive?

    3. do you need a cd key to run the DS? does this mean i will have to buy 2 copies, 1 for the server and 1 for myself?

If I had to guess to #2 regarding CD in drive. Given that the dedicated server launches and can start a server with the demo, I would be willing to be it does not require the disc.

    2. DVD not needed to run a DS

FI_FlimFlam, thanks for the info! Ugh, at least we have a compatible vid card for our server box, but the rest of what I'm reading freaks me out.

It's own UBI account, possibly only one server per IP, and maybe the dedicated server needing it's own CD key? Lockdown muliplayer will surely die a quick death.

oh, it will definitely. I give it several months before multiplayer becomes unpopular as Athena Sword.

Alot of it is speculation but well reasoned. Only someone from UBI or RSE can chime in and confirm or deny at this point., And I don't have any hope of that actually happening.

Right now this game is looking like an admin's minor nightmare. We shall see.

Things that bother me so far:

1)No multi-home that I can find. In otherwords the ability to run multiple servers to specify either IP or different ports for different servers on the same IP.

The UBI.com username just makes no sense for a dedicated server IMO.

No confirmation of the presence or absence of a between round timer.

No restriction kits. I can't believe there is no option for this. As of right now it looks like we have no choice but to deal with the nade launcher and hi cap mags as part of the gameplay in muliplayer.

No information regarding abiltiy to remotely administer the server if there is any. Without some form of remote admin, it will require that someone physically login to the server to admin - kick or ban a person, switch maps, etc. That will be a problem with teams/clans and some server providers.

The start button on the server status screen. That means the server may not be able to be launched from a script and start automatically when a server boots, or recover from a crash. It will be down until an admin can actually login and restart it manually.

So far this game looks like it IS going to be problemeatic to host deidcated servers.
