Thread: Is Exile Canon? | Forums

  1. #1
I've been looking around everywhere for this, but haven't found anything difinitive. I'm trying to find out about how Exile fits into the Myst/Riven/Uru lore as defined by Cyan, or if it even does (well, other than Yeesha, who is now part of Cyan's lore, as of Uru).

I watched the Rand Miller video in which he talks about the past, present and future of Myst, and in that, he acknowledges Presto Studio's work on Exile and says they did a good job, but I don't know if that means it's "officially" part of Myst canonical lore.

Anyone have a difinitive word on this?

I think the hardcore Mystical (hey ... I like that word!) might not consider it canon ...
however, people who have only played the games are sure to consider it part of the timeline.

The official word from Cyan is that neither the games nor the books are exaclty what happened and only "retellings" of the story with deliberate errors strategically placed.

Hmm, I would have thought that at least the books and Cyan-produced games are canon, since they are written (at least in part) by the Miller brothers.

Heh, in any case, thanks for the information.

Most of the game-related inaccuracies are due to the restrictions involved with putting a linear story into the hands of a player who can progress through the tale not only in a non-linear fashion, but also happen to come across a wrong ending, not to mention the technological restraints and "closed loop" requirements for a game (think of how many red herrings Myst and Riven would have had if they had been the *actual* places and not stripped-down game versions...)

Most of the inaccuracies in the novels come from David Wingrove's imagination overlapping on top of Cyan's rough draft... personally I think Ryan Miller should write Book of Marrim, his work on Inkarri and the original first chapter of BoA was incredible.

What was Ryan Miller's original draft for the Book of Atrus and where can I find it?

Wait, I seem to have missed something somewhere. I know Rand and Robyn Miller, but who's Ryan? I've not heard that name before.

Ryan is the younger Miller brother (as in younger than both Rand and Robyn.
