(Torpedowake): Will SHIII have a strategic gameplay where you can order your subs to patrol areas?
(Devteam): The player will not be able to direct other subs to patrol areas, as only Admiral Doenitz / BDU was able to do so. However, his contact reports may influence the presence of other assets in the chase of a convoy or battle group.
Nice to know as I never wanted this to be a RTS.

Actually, having 'control' over more than 1 sub would be great. Imagine your own small wolfpack under your command. While you are in control of one, the others can be more or less controlled by the computer. A quick hot-key press away, and you are in another sub. I'd MUCH rather have an RTS type of game than another FPS/The Sims type of game. What do you think you could do with a 'pack' of 4-5 subs under your command?
This should be an option for after you finish the game. . . sort of a reward!
It would be nice if you had a 3d War room in Berlin that you could play the whole game from as Karl. Sort of like Task Force 1942. Command from the map, and if you wanted to, jump in to a specific ship (in this case sub) you could.
Mind you this should either be an option on the realism menu, or like I said a reward for finishing the game.

The old "wolfpack" by Novalogic worked so, and it was really fun.
On the other hand, it was a bit arcadish and not really immersive; everything was controlled by a single screen.

I remember that game, that is the one I'm taking the idea from, even though I had only been able to play it a few times till my computer crapped out on me!(my god, how many YEARS ago was that!) But hopefully SH3 won't be 'arcadish' and there definitely is more than one screen to control from! RTS and Simulators would be a great combination. And the DevTeam did say 'It might turn finally in a strategy game' (question Y4 Silent Hunter III FAQ).
Perhaps as an add-on, who knows.
I don't know if, when saying 'It might turn finally in a strategy game' the DevTeam was showing a possibility or a problem.
The problem I see is that SHIII is growing as an higly detailed subsim; the level of detail is excellent for ruling one boat, your boat, but could be excessive for the effective management of more boats by a single player.
Speaking form me, to lead a whole wolfpack I'd prefer a simpler system.

If you want to do it realistic then the only boat you could have detailed control over is the one you are currently on board.
And the only way to switch boats would be to meet up somewhere, no teleporting across the Atlantic.
Other boats would be controlled by radio.
Boats would send reports at regular intervals and the leaders (at sea or on shore) would build a picture with these reports.
Then the leaders can send messages back to give boats extra data and orders.
For example a boat has been tracking a convoy for a while.
Then you give the other boats orders to intercept the convoy and attack at a specific time.
Then the boats go on their way, maybe send a few updates in the mean time and attack when they reach the convoy.
During the attack they might go silent for a while and when they are finished you would start receiving reports about the results of the attack.
Or it would remain eerily silent.
Do you imagine to have a full convoy attack, supported by Luftwaffe?
Helping a pocket cruiser marauder would be cool, too!
Unrealistic, no, not at all. Historically incorrect, yes, definitely. It could have happened, but it didn't.
Who knows, with the Mission Editor and the right units, it just might be possible though!
