When Naruto trains with Yamato he finds out Naruto has wind element chakra. He at one point creates a variation of rasengan using his wind element chakra which is Fuuton: Rasenshuriken(Wind release:Spiraling shuriken) Which, as name suggests, is shaped like a giant shuriken. When it comes in contact it slices so many times not even Kakashi could read with his sharingan how many times it sould cut the opponent. But there are drawbacks. Instead of one shadow clone Naruto needs two(one for the rptation of normal chakra and the other for wind element chakra control), and if overused could damage the nerves in his arm. Nerves can never be repaired even with the greatest of medical jutsu, which is why Tsunade forbid any further use of the technique.

That's actually wrong, Rasen Shuriken is the halfway finished form of the actual rasengan.

Just like sasuke's been manipulating his chidori (by himself). Sasuke employs variants of the technique, using the fundamentals behind the Chidori to create a number of new abilities. Sasuke's first display of such an ability involves emitting electricity from all over his body, both shielding himself from attacks and paralyzing any it comes into contact with. He later proves able to mold the electricity into more solid forms, creating both swords and throwing needles on separate occasions.
