The bolded lines are the most likely interpretations of 'Haze' in the context of the game, the italicised lines probably to a lesser extent - Haze does not refer to a character.

    1. It's not the name of a character, it's just the name of the game. And the main character's name is Shane Carpenter.

    2. Ok uh, I'll give it a shot.

You start off as Shane Carpenter, a new recruit in the Mantel army, sent into South America to combat the Promise Hand rebels, who you are lead to believe are the "bad guys". Mantel is big conglomerate, being players in many different industries. They are involved in everything, from the batteries in your flashlight to the rubber in your shoes.

One of the things Mantel takes pride on, is their private military, featuring the miracle drug, Nectar. Nectar is your classic "bigger, stronger, faster" performance enhancer. It makes Mantel troopers the best of the best.

During the course of the game, due to some disfunctioning, Shane discovers that Mantel is actually controlling their troops, and censoring images that Mantel doesn't want them to see through the use of Nectar and the "Belmet" suit. Mantel troops are seeing an edited world. They don't see dead bodies, blood or injured crying children.

Shane also comes to find out that the Promise Hand rebels are not necessarily the "bad guys", and that it is actually Mantel trying to take over in South America, while the Promise Hand are fighting back against Mantel.

Shane figures out that Mantel has lied and deceived him, and is presented with a moral decision to continue helping Mantel achieve world domination, or to defect and help the rebels protect their home.

The game is all about presenting war in a different light. It's no longer "ok these are the bad guys, you're a good guy so go kill them", the game will make you think about who you're representing and if they stand for the same thing you do. Because all you really are is just a small tool in a much bigger war.
