Thread: Ti 4600 outperforms fx5500!!? | Forums

    Ok, here's the story:
2 days ago, i stated that my good old geforce 4 ti 4600 128 mb performed better on halo then my fathers geforce fx 5500.
    The full specs are:
    my pc:
    -geforce 4 Ti 4600, 128 mb, 66.93 drivers
    -pentium 4 2 Ghz
    -512 mb RDRAM
-Maxtor 40 GB HDD (14% free disk space)

    my fathers PC:
-geforce fx 5500 256 mb, same drivers
    -AMD 64 3200
    -512 mb DDR RAM
200 GB HDD (93% free disk space)

some one (don't remember your name, sorry) said "impossible! Get a benchmark tool and try it out!" So I d'loaded the trial version of 3DMark03, ran disk cleanup, disk defragmentation, terminated unnecessarry processes and ran the test (on both PCs)
my PC scoored 1783 points. My father's scored 1550 points. So WTF??
Is the Ti still better then I thought, or is the 5500 just a piece of junk?

Sigh.. this is really OT ..

But, ok, 3D Mark tests are VERY videocard dependant. In the 05 version cpu matters even less than in 03.

Anyway, here's the spec comparison from Rojakpot.com :

    GeForce FX 5500 : corespeed 270 MHz ,fillrate 1080 MTexels/s, mem bus bwidth 64/128-bits, mem type DDR @ 200 MHz, mem bandwidth 3.20/6.40 GB/s

    GeForce4 Ti4600 : corespeed 300 MHz, fillrate 2400 MTexels/s, mem bus width 128-bits, mem type DDR 325MHz, mem bandwidth10.40 GB/s

VERY CLEAR to me why the GF4 To4600 wins. Yes, the FX5500 is indeed a piece of sh1t, even on a AMD 64.

Pretender..... the entire FX is NOT cr@p, but both cards Nexplosion has are indeed cr@p to play CT or any current high profile game.
    He'd best spend some cash on a GF6800GT or a X800XL.

Knot3D and Ninj3r are right ofcourse: this is as OT as it can get, but since the story started HERE (and not on soem other tech forum) I thought I could post it.

Ans seeing the specs, I indeed think we found an explanation... I just didn't think the Ti was higher clocked then the 5500!

Oh, and btw: I WILL buy a new card/system (Have yet to decide about that).

Only way to be sure is to yank your Dad's card and install it in your computer. The two cards use the same drivers so it should be as simple as cracking the cases open and swapping cards. Then re-run 3D-Mark and check those scores.

Yes, correct, the true way to compare is to use the same system for testing. Pull your father's card out and put it in your computer and run the test again. I used to have the TI 4600 myself, but I was never statisfied until I got my 9800 Pro. The draw to the FX line was the DX 9.0 stuff which really doesn't make that much difference.

Check it in your comp and see if you results are correct.
    <a><center>My system:

    AMD 64 3400+ @ 2.31Ghz
1 gig of Corsair TwinX DDR PC3200 RAM
    Radeon X800 XT 256
    Windows XP SP 2
    Antec TruePower TrueBlue True480 PSU
    SB Audigy 2 ZS
    LiteOn DVD+/-RW drive
    Plexwriter CD-RW
    160, 100, and 40GB harddrives

actually, one of the reasons the ti card outperformed the fx is because the fx has to process all those dx9 functions. the geforce4 ti's are dx8.1 cards afaik. so if you were running a game like hl2, the ti would get more fps, not only because the fx line is crappy, but because that fx has to process dx9 functions (ps2.0). the ti would only process the dx8.1 functions (ps1.4).
