hi all thanks for reading this post

ok so I am currently on a P4 2.4GHz processor, 128mb G4 Ti4200, 256mb ddr 2700 ram and WIN 98SE game played fine with long load ups for the maps.

However my new 512mb chip arrived today so i thought i'd throw that in as well, windows boots up fine recognises all the ram as being there but game has become un-playable, what am i doing wrong? please help, i have already tested the ram chips individually and they work just fine i have also tried them in every combination of slots together.

Also someone mentioned to me about windows only being able to handle 512mb ram if thats the case i have windows 2000 professional here of WIN XP pro, which should i use for the best gameing experience?

    thanks again for your help

Windows 98 and ME limit total RAM to 512MB. Third party utilites such as Cacheman have been developed to correct this.

I"ve found XP Pro to be stable, easy to work with, and good at managing large amounts of RAM. My current total is 1024MB PC2100. This is my preferrence for gaming.

(on my Soyo board, the biggest stick of RAM must be in the slot closest to the CPU for system stability)

Win98SE can handle more than 512 MB RAM just fine, as long as you make the necessary tweaks - Cacheman 5.11 has a couple of presets that will make the tweaks for you, but you can also do some Google searches to find some sites that will tell you how to make them manually by changing some settings in the system.ini file or something.

I've been running Win98Se with 1GB RAM for several months just fine (using one of the Cacheman presets), and I tested last night just to see if more than 512MB was really being used, and sure enough Cacheman reported max RAM usage during an FB QMB mission had reached some 637 MB or so (and no page-file usage, IIRC).

I'm using two matched (same brand/speed etc) sticks of 512MB DDR RAM on my ASUS P4PE - it does seem to be true that some MOBOs don't handle mis-matched sticks very well, and some are finicky about which sticks go best in which slots/banks, so check your MOBO manual if you have problems.

i have 1 gig of ram in win98 se and it works wonderfully
    with cache man managing it.
some times i look on how much ram has been used at a time (when i have many things opened at the same time)and i have seen windows 98 using 900 megs of ram and managing it like a champ, of course with the help of cacheman

I had the same problem as you, bought 516 ram, so to increase to 1 gb. windows would not load. althought ram was regognised. Solution to the problem is:

Go to Start>Run->Sysedit go to systen.ini file,. Find the section [vcache] and add under it:

    MinFileCache=8192 and under this
MaxFileCache=524288.save,exit, shut down add the extra ram, restart and it should work.

This was sourced from MS website. the values were found on another forum base on 1024mb.

    Hope this of use.

    regards del
