Thread: What drive is better for installing? | Forums

  1. #1
Here's the deal, I'm tempted to have another go at SHIV. Yes, this is the second time I've been tempted to blow the dust off the game and have another go. But I want to help the game run as fast as possible with the rig I have at the moment.

But here is the problem, I have two hard drives on my PC and I know they are fairly old I would like to know which hard drive is better for game performance - or is it irrelevant where I put the game.

I only have 1Gb at the moment, and yes I do know my RAM situation is a bit lacking and I know 2GB is better but I'm trying to make do at the moment and helping the game run as fast as possible - you see, buying a house this summer has cancelled any upgrade plans for another year at the most.

    Here is my system specs;

    AMD Athlon64 X2 Dual Core 4600+ running at 2.41GHz
1024MB RAM Corsair TwinX matching pair [edit : DDR3200]
    Asus A8N SLI Deluxe mainboard
    Asus EN7900 Top 256MB RAM
    Windows XP Professional
    SB Audigy 4
    Hitachi Desk Star 250Gb 7,200rpm / SATA2 (90% free disk space) - Master Drive
    Western Digital Raptor 74Gb 10,000rpm / SATA2 (55% free disk space) - Slave Drive

Both drives are over 12 months old, in fact I can't remember when I bought them, I do know the Raptor is the youngest out of the two.

With my set up does it really matter where I put the game?

Or, am I barking up the wrong tree?

Any help or comments would be appreciated, plus if anyone has any upgrade recommendations I would also appreciate that too, bearing in mind funds are tight at the moment

At 10,000 rpm the slave drive should be a little faster. But other than that which HD doesn't really matter. I have mine on my D drive.

    Thanks for your comments Fred8615

I had a feeling that one would be the best bet, just wanted to throw it out there that's all

From a potential upgrade point of view could someone with the experience give me some pointers as to improving my specification good enough to handle SH4?

    Hi Goose,

Overall I'd say you have a fair system there, not dissimilar to mine. One advantage you have is that are running SATA HD's alrady.

You already know you need more ram, so that's your first pointer - You're running 2x512's yes? I would suggest, budget allowing, that you invest in 1Gb pairs. I'm guessing that you have 3200 speed ram, given your motherboard. Ram prices fluctuate as you know, but it'll stand you in good stead in the long run my friend.

I run 512x2 and it seems to be alright. Some of the ports like Pearl Harbor are a bit laggy and choppy at times but for the most part, 1gig of RAM works just fine. The loading speed of the game might improve a bit if I upgraded to 2gig but I am not in that big of a hurry. I can wait an extra 10 or 15 seconds for the game to load.
