Thread: Opening ports ?? | Forums

  1. #1
I apologise for asking so many questions and I appreciate all the help that has been given on this forum.

I've read on these forums and the chaos theory manual which ports have to be opened for online play.
The problem being, I'm running Norton internet security and I don't understand the manual. Is anyone using Norton I/S and knows how to open the said ports, and can explain it to me in simple terms?

I think I mentioned in an earlier post that I can get in as far as the lobbies. I don't want to try and join a game or start one until I'm sure I'm set up right. I don't really want to annoy anyone because I'm not set up right.

For VS if you don't want to host, you don't have to worry about opening ports. If you do want to host and can't figure out how to open your ports, just disable the firewall while you play (only if you are comfortable and understand the risk with doing that). For coop, you must forward the ports.

If there's an Exception list with Norton I.S (or any other way of unblocking), add SCCT to it. That will automatically open the required ports through the firewall, but you'll still need to add them manually through the router if you have one.

I'm not sitting at the machine I have Norton IS on at the moment but here's a try from memory:

Edit: Revised once I double checked the settings on the machine I have NIS running on.

Open Norton IS, on the left side of the NIS window choose 'Norton Internet Security', directly under that choose 'Status & Settings, now in the center pane select 'Personal Firewall', in the lower right select the 'Configure' button. This opens your NIS firewall settings.

Next select the 'Programs' tab, in the scroll list of configured programs in the lower half of that tab under 'Manual Program Control' look for SCCT (it will show up as SplinterCell3 if it's been configured already), just to its right is a drop down list of firewalling options (Permit all, Block All, and Custom), choose 'Permit All' if it's not already set that way and click the 'OK' button at the bottom. You're done.

If it's not in the list there are buttons at the bottom of that tab and one is 'Add...', select it and navigate to where SplinterCell3.exe is on your hard drive (usually "C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Chaos Theory\System\SplinterCell3.exe"), add it with the 'Permit All' firewalling rule.

You can also 'manually configure' and set up the exact rules to allow SCCT to only use the ports listed in the manual if you like. From your post I'd guess you'd find just choosing the 'Permit All' option best.
