I have just had a quick look at the SH5 side of the forum but I can't see if it's for sale yet, or if it is, where it can be bought.

Yep, i have it for a while now.

If you decide to buy it, be prepared for the usual bug assault we already saw with SH-III and SH-IV and a horrible "improved" user interface. Ah yes and there is of course also the DRM.

Over at the SH5 mod workshop there are already lots of good mods available that aim to bring back the UI from SH-IV or SH-III , add missing features like the TDC and fix a few bugs.

    Screenies here

I guess Celeon, you got a censored German version of the game? In one of your screenshots, the eagle on the blanket looks like it is holding a ring. We all know there should be a "S-word" in its talons. Do non-German gamers get the real Eagle?

Yep. I thought modders will put all the stuff back in anyway so why bother getting me a foreign version.

Funny you mention that , because recently all german Collector's Editions of SH-V were taken off the shelves because of a tiny inzy winzy swastika that was discovered on page 27 of the game's manual

Somebody forgot to take it out. No wonder as its really just a tiny stamp.

My big question: Do we now have wolfpacks or multiple U-boats in the game? Or are we still the only U-boat in the war?

    They censored out the swastika?!?!

Why? Its a part of history. This is a historic simulation! Leave it in.

They used swastikas in the Medal of Honor series.... Noone got too upset about it. That game isnt even a sim!!! I get shot about 100 times, as long as I find a "health pack" Ill be ok!!!

add missing features like the TDC
Oh Ubi, this is what I love about you. Why would a U boat sim need a working TDC anyway? Of all the things to forget to get working before release. Come on guys!

buddha, the swastika has been banned from public exhibition in a great many areas of the world. Germany has taken it a step further and pretty much not allowed swastikas anywhere, even in electronic games. The censorship of that symbol is rather extreme in that country. It falls into the same category as the ban on one nations aircraft being depicted shooting down another's on model box artwork. It might offend some group's sensibilities, so depictions of history must be altered to calm those parties.

Admittedly, I don't believe that was the intent of the original legislation, but it got carried away, and it's not a subject that anyone who wants to maintain their position in government is going to challenge. Politicians are politicians no matter their country, and they aren't about to tempt fate with loosing personal power because of some perceived extremism in censoring a hated symbol of oppression.

Personally, I agree with you wholeheartedly about the historical aspect, but that's not how the real world works. While the pendulum has swung to the extreme toward censorship, allowing any display opens the door to those who are not interested in remembering history, but only interested in the return of the forces behind the symbol.

So the upshot is that those who want to remember, will do so, symbol or no, and those who want to forget will forget, made all the easier with the symbol not around to remind them.

Of course, that leaves it up to those of us who choose to remember to prevent events such as those from transpiring again in the future, as those who choose to forget will have forgotten.

Remember: Those who don't know history are doomed to repeat it. Example: German invasion of the USSR, June 22, 1941. If Hitler had listened to the history Napoleon so kindly offered after his failed invasion of Russia, things might have turned out differently. You simply don't attack Russia that late in the year, or preferably at all, without the threat of General Winter.
