That "hosts" file sounds like a system file to me. Don't delete it.
Host file wikipedia page...

Now I'll be honest, I looked this up because I'm having the same damn issue with Assassin's Creed. I just bought it over Steam and it won't open because of the scimitar file or something. I'm on a 27 inch iMac from 2010. If it runs on any mac device, it should work FINE on MINE. I don't know why MAC approved this game.

DO delete this File.
Put it aside if you want. I don't understand why you hesitate. The system will recreate a new file.
It worked 100% for me.

Ok, I've tried this, it doesn't work. I've downloaded the .mpkge ubisoft file, I've deleted the hosts file, nothing. How do I get the ubisoft gamelauncher to work?

Hello, I've been having the same problem on my 2011 15 inch Macbook Pro.
I downloaded both AC2 and Splinter Cell: Conviction but none of the two works....UBISOFT...PLEASE FREAKIN WORK ON THIS...YOU GUYS SAID THEY ARE COMPATIBLE FOR MACS BUT THEY OBVIOUSLY DON'T WORK!!! I'm getting pretty ****ed at this guys...can't even get a refund. I think I'm going to call them ASAP and the HOST file thingy didn't work for me.

I also tried deleting the Hosts file, didn't work. I bought the AC: Brotherhood download for Mac from Cdon.com. and just as the first post, it will just bounce a few times on the dock and then it will ask if I want to send a report back to Apple.
Isn't there another way to fix it?
