I can get close enough for the smaller ones to use the G7e at nearly max range but these large convoys are just impossible to get close to so am considering going back to the G7a.

Any thoughts from late war Kaleuns would be great, thanks

Nah, sorry! We don't do convoys...

I think we're doing better tonnagewise going after single ship and/or small groups. Finding the risk engaging heavily defended convoys to high.

    Sorry!

Well............., yes, I will attack a late war convoy if the setup is right.

Since I drive a TypeIID, my total attack consists of a three torpedo spread.

But for even this modest effort to be attempted, I need to be ahead of the convoy, so that it's forward speed works in my favor in extending the maximum practical range.

As soon as I think my torpedoes have a chance of reaching their targets, I fire.

I then go to flank speed, IMMEDIATELY dive to the maximum practical depth, ....and take a course 90 degrees away from the convoy's course: ....BEFORE the escorts figure out that there is an attack under way.

Once I reach my desired depth, I go to silent running, and try to creep away.

....And YES! ....Even this "chicken-hearted" attack can lead to some exciting times on occasion!

Well just back from my patrol, over 3 months at sea, just couldn't get near those big convoys and the small ones I could only get into position for one target each time, even then I only managed that about 1 in every 10 contacts with them, the rest were travelling alone, in twos and in TFs. But by some luck I managed 110000 tonnes for the patrol, added it to my 100k club entry. Base was changed from Bordeaux to Trondheim after only 4 days at sea, no idea whhere I am going to go with my IXD2 from there. Docked at Trondheim 4 Dec'44.
