Thread: MiG-29S BVR Engagement Range | Forums

I must say, that I'm a little disappointed with the results of a little test I set up.

I had started to notice that it was extremely hard to lock up a target in BVR with the Fulcrum C, even though tracking was working perfectly.

I placed two Su-27s with empty payloads (to ensure jamming was not the cause of the issue) 90km away from my Fulcrum C, and set it up so we were facing each other. The test was repeated at two altitudes. 2000m and 8000m. Results did not vary.

I could see the Flankers on my MFD and HUD from the second the mission started, but the radar would no lock the target until the target came within 36km of the plane.

Yes, you read that correctly. Thirty six kilometers.

The MiG-29S cannot engage a target in BVR mode until it is within 36km. This has to be some sort of sick joke. Who the hell puts a plane in the air when the enemy is sporting ARH missiles which have a longer range engagement capability than the god damn radar on your aircraft?

So anyway, is this a bug, a mistake or what?

I heard they will address radar issues in the patch. I was playing around with the mig earlier this morning, against an SU-30, and I couldn't get a lock until about 24km, and even then it kept dropping the lock. I haven't had one successful kill in BVR with any fighter yet.

It's quite the change from Flanker 2.5, that's for sure.

I'm just wondering if they made it 36km intentionally, or if this is a bug.

I was under the impression that if a target could be scanned, it could be locked.

It's a bug... It is supposed do be about 50km in RL for fighter class aircraft... Although id does wary, so 36 Km isn't that bad
A message from Mother Russia... BE AWARE!!!!!

Are you adding jamming to this equation? Doesn't the Su-30 have internal ECM?

Don't forget the effects of radar cross section. A fighter viewed nose-on doesn't have a particularly large RCS. Try the same test against a large transport and you will get a lock much further out.
