While playing as USN fighter, I noticed during a couple of missions, the timing of the AI fighers seems mis-cued. That is, as my flight package arrives at the target area, the enemy fighters were flying away. While I suppose in reality this can happen, one would think that some of the AI should be around to fight (after all, this is the aim of the game - to have fun mixing it up in the virtual world).
Is this a glich, or meant to be this way for realism? Thanks for reading!

I wondered about that myself because the Japanese CAP flight does that mission after mission after mission. One would think they would eventually catch on to what is happening....huh?
You can break orders and chase them down after bombing/escorting but you'll pretty much end up dead meat over enemy territory almost every time.
Or
You can open the mission with FMB and have the Japanese flight loiter over the target area WP or you can target your flight to them.
Many of the Dgen missions leave a lot to be desired and need sprucing up a bit....though doing so takes some of the suspense away.
I'm thinking the offline player is sort of a second class citizen in the Il2 world.
