Thread: Taught the Mrs to shoot today | Forums

  1. #1
My first time behind the trigger in over 15 years and her second time ever. Also my first time on a commercial indoor range. (I tried out for rifle team in college-FAIL)
We had the range to ourselves, which was very nice.
Started her out with basic safety, the how to operate safety, check chamber & load.
Used a Browning BAR-22. The same gun my dad used to teach me to shoot.
She is a natural. 2 of the head shots are mine along with the shoulder grouping. The rest are hers, including the neck shot which was aimed & not a straggler.

Tried to move her on the High Standard, but was having trigger problems, so she went back to the rifle. After about 50 rounds she was done for the day & our time was running out, so I broke out the .44 Magnum. At 25ft, I needed a barn door to hit anything, almost. (1 in the 10 & 3 in the 9 ring) Had forgotten how hot my Old Man's home loads are.

But the Missus "had a blast. No pun intended." and wants to make it a weekly thing.
Now if i can talk her into a Barrett...

You're screwed now, man. And I don't mean that in a good way, either.

Hey BRASSTURTLE, that's great you got your wife into a fun shared hobby! My wife will go shooting with me and my brother-in-law every once in a while. She's pretty good with pistols at 25 yds, and she does equally well with an M98 Mauser, Mosin-Nagant, and Swedish Mauser at 200 yds with most rounds hitting well in the black using iron sights. She's competent with shooting clays with a shotgun too. She'd even be better if she put in more practice overall, but she isn't interested enough to commit the kind of time I like to put into it.

Great idea to teach your wife to shoot.

Now get her to take out an extensive life insurance policy on you.

There are few things more satisfying than teaching a loved one how to shoot.

A couple of years ago we were preparing for me to go on an extended contract in Boston.
So, before I headed out my wife wanted to learn to shoot. ( we live in a vaguely crappy neighborhood ) I had considered buying her a 9mm. So, we went to the range to see what she could get along with and teach her to actually shoot. After a few boxes of ammo she really did not like any of the 9mm's that we tried out. But she noticed that my 1911 seemed to be working just fine for me. So, she gave that a try. It was like a laser in her hands. At which point my pt1911 pretty much became hers. This of course freed me up to by the GSR and I have been happy ever since...

The next year we were out at the pseudo civilian range at Fort Lewis for an afternoon of shooting with a friend that is stationed there. She disliked the AK hated the SKS and now has her won Mosin Nagat. Granted, I think she appreciates that with the Bayonet fixed that thing still makes a great spear when its out of ammo..
