Thread: Why do you love these games?? | Forums

    I like simulators because:
You don't get many "I pwnzorz joo!" people. Their communities are more serious.
    They are challenging.
You can appreciate what people did and do in planes, tanks, subs, etc.
Take long to master, but are very satisfying.
    And other stuff.
They also "train" your patience, in a good way.

I enjoy simulations, this one in particular because, as everyone has said already it makes you think. Makes you appreciate what people did / do. Normal games are fun enough, ie: FPS's, RTS's RPG's, and Ive played and will continue to play them periodically, but they dont have the the same feel as a good sim. My friend came over the other day and was like "What are you doin, playin a ****in game?" (this guy does martial arts everyday all the time and is pissed cause I dont train with him as much as of recently, lol) My response was...."Its not a game....its....a simulation." I proceeded to show him how in "depth" the game is in relation to the TDC and firing solutions...he was pretty impressed once he gave it a chance. So to sum it all up, simulations are where its at, Microsoft flight sims are fun, Silent Hunter is SERIOUS FUN.

When I get home I plug in SH3 and lose myself for a few hours either in a career mode or in multiplayer with other good people from the sim community here..After an hour or two I'll be unwound enough to be able to get some sleep... Its sort of like my valium lol.. Why do YOU play??? I thought this would be an interesting topic for a change of pace here
If any one wants to see pics of what I do and where I go PM me and ill send a link.. You may find it intersting...

Its an escape from the real world. I love being able to practically go back in time and experience WW2 first hand in a simulation. I have always had an interst in naval history especially the pacific war. Some of these games look so real as SH4 does, it makes you feel as if you are really at sea!

I've always loved sims pretty much the same way you do, and I have those sub and Fli-sims too. Matter of fact for nostalgia's purpose, here are some of the simulations I enjoyed on my IBM-PC with a CGA card (see if you remember any of these):

    1) F-19 Stealth Fighter
    2) Red Storm Rising
    3) Test Drive 1 & 2
    3) Grand Prix Racing
    4) F-15 Strike Eagle
    5) F-16 Fighting Falcon
    6) LHX Attack Chopper
    7) Gunship
    8) Silent Service
    9) Chuck Yeagers Aircombat
    10) **** there's too many of them games!

One of the main reasons why i play these type of games is that they are not that linear.

NoN linear gameplay is very important to me as it prolongs the life of the game (and you have Elite to thank for that)

In response to Kohr-Ah see if any you remember these from the days of the spectrum or c64

1: Hunter killer (1983)the first sub game i ever played i think

2: Silent Service (1986) done by Sid Meier (ubergod) and later re-released under a compilation called "air\sea supremacy" which also featured Gunship , F15 strike Eagle, Carrier Command and P47 thunderbolt and released by UBI SOFT.

Remind me again why we haven't installed seatbelts on this thing?
Dylan Hunt: Missile tubes 1 through 5.
Rommie: Are you sure that's necessary?
    Dylan Hunt: It's chasin

Like a few others here you can "blame" Sid Meier, Microprose and Silent Service on the Commodore C64 for my love of WW2 US Subs. I owned Silent Service II on the Amiga too. No other subsim came close to the feel of those games until I played SH3 but even then I was yearning for the Pacific and a Gato.

Yeah, .....Sid did a great job! I can remember "wasting" hundreds of hours playing the original Silent Service, with it's four color CGA graphics and the pathetic pc speaker sound: ....Even with those limitations, the game had an "immersion factor".

For me sims are a great way to immerse yourself away from reality for a while. I started with silent service on the Amiga (what a machine for its day!) and fell in love. I've loved the sea since before i could walk, surfing, sailing, diving etc and sub sims tap into that love (and the satisfying big blowy up bits)

With no disrespect to SH, but when it came out was it arevamped silent service? From memory they seemed very similar.
