Dunno much about compression but this is what I found on fraps.com faq:
Why is the AVI movie generated by Fraps so big? How can I reduce the size?
The filesize is big because there isn't enough time to encode the movie while the game is running. The movie frames are slightly compressed, but still require a large amount of disk space due to the high resolutions. Once you have finished capturing you should convert the saved AVI into one of the popular compressed movie formats such as mpeg or divx. Recommended programs for doing this are tmpgenc (Tsunami Mpeg Encoder), and VirtualDub.
Using VirtualDub is quite easy. To create a compressed version of the AVI follow these steps:
Start VirtualDub
Select File->Open and choose the AVI in the Fraps directory you wish to compress.
Select Video->Compression and choose the codec you wish to compress with (usually divx)
Select File->Save As AVI and specify a filename for the new AVI.
If you have Windows XP you can also use Windows Movie Maker to compress the video files. If you use Windows Movie Maker it's recommended that you keep your Fraps video files at 640x480 or under.

I personally hope that DivX and/or *.wmv compression/format be used as the standard for movie compression. I and a few others have major problems with the XVid format...MY prob could be incompatibility with Windows ME, but another person has problems with his Windows XP...

hi wiley,
i won't like to see wmv as any standard compression. as with any proprietary formats.
considering that divx started as a cracked mpeg4, with the intention to make that good compression available for more than windows media players ea, it is to be seen, what divx.com will have in mind with upcoming developments...
anyway, imo it is worth to hold xvid up and if it is only to keep the open-source-idea up.
divx5.1 is surely an excellent way to compress, although it seems pretty slow to me. even in standard quality (said to be comparable with "slow" in divx5.0x) it is about 2-3 times slower than xvid. although i like the feedback-window
for your problems with xvid:
can you specify, which are the problems? i use koepi's binaries, stable and unstable worked in win9x and winxp for me. i had some problems with nic's one though, especially after installing his decoder together with koepi's release. don't know which one was the source of problems, but clean remove of both and reinstall of koepi's did it then. also virtualdub before 1.5.3 (i think) got probs with finishing a job.
anyway, it's the "open-source" dilemma: not easy to find a way through all developments
but i find good quality in xvid-compression, the more as there is still no final development. divx goes commercial, wmv is scarely opened to non-proprietary and the standard all is based on is the slowly discussed mpeg4, divx, wmv and xvid are far more advanced. you should consider giving xvid a chance... sometimes
