I am about to retire my Asus Nforce2 Athlon XP 3200+/1 GiG OCZ Gold 3700, ATI 9800 Pro 128MB.

I am definately getting a DFI Lan Party UT SLI DR socket 939 Expert or Venus. CPU probably an AMD 64 3800+ or better.

    I have a question about video card.....either:

two XFX 7900GT "XXX" Edition @ 560 Mhz /256MB or
    one XFX 7900GTX Etreme Edition @ 690Mhz /512MB

Which way should I go with the video card setup?

If I get the 7900GTX, I am not sure when (if at all) I will be able to "swing" the second card for SLI, so this is why I am asking if 2 7900GT would be better than one 7900GTX for now.

BTW, anyone else make a higher overclocked card "retail" than XFX ??

    Thanks for the suggestions,

    Regards,

U can always go SLI down the road.thats what im doing. Also remember that u can expect the video card price to go down, if u decide to go SLI in a year or so. Keep in mind that this game dosent need that much vid card power. Im running 6800gs, and i dont feel the need for more, i currently run all settings on high.

The single 7900GTX will get you the best for now, and when BoB is released you may be in shape to add the second for SLI. Who knows by then, there may be something better to be had, and if this is the case, at least you didn't invest in the second card now. Might save you a bit of $$$.

i agree Quazi. in fact "future-proof" doesnt exist in my mind. will ddr ram even be used in the next gen? more likely ddr2.

if i had to build one now, i would probably go with my same system and a 7900. and maybe a faster single-core. here's what my 7800 is doing:

i wonder how much a monitor upgrade will benefit?

i also remember way way back in september when the 7800gtx ko was the baddest mofo you could put on your mobo.

EVGA 7800 GTX KO... Extremely Mint board. When I first purchased my New Rig last year it was SLI set-up from the start[mother board/power supply/extra power plug]... so I saved a few Bills off the price of the then New 7800 GTX KO by buying the second board to complete the SLI later on [well this week].
The single 7800 ran Very Smooth... compared to my old 9800 Pro. But the 3D effect and overall operation of the SLI set-up is Fantastic sofar.
I need more adjustments to refine the set-up... but in the long run I won't be changing boards or need to change for awhile to come for any future New Games or IL-2/BoB.

Go with the single GTX. I have one on a similar system and have no need for SLI at all.
