I have a question at Dan Hay and his team,

How long will you and your team provide Patches for Far Cry 3 ?

... or rather what conditions must be fulfilled to end these services ?

It's important for the community, but knowing Ubisoft they'll abandon it after 2 or 3 patches.

Questions such as this should really be held for when the com dev is posting on the forums..

They can relay questions to he team and get answers

At present the team are hard at work making the game - so it may be closer to release before you get any answers.

No offence, but Mr. Hay and his opinion in regard to patches will be appreciated.

You cant really demand someone answer something thats a pretty big question. (i.e. longterm support)

It's absolutely critical to know (hopefully prior to release day) - especially for PC gamers who have unfortunately become accustomed to Ubisoft's total lack of support for their products post release.

Sadly, just being told that support will be provided is no longer a guarantee of it being given when crunch time actually rolls around. I personally think that the team at CD Projekt RED are incredible with their post-release support and also because they give PC gamers DLC for free.

As Shade has already stated, it is highly unlikely that Dan Hay will respond here as the role of link between the Dev team and the Community is that of the COMDEV; who is yet to be announced for this title.

Even then, I would be amazed if you saw anything other than a generic "we are commited to supporting this game".

Why?
Well as someone who is not employed by Ubisoft but has worked in a SW development environment, the goal for any team is to have ZERO patches post release, so to ask them to state how many patches will be provided is crazy.

If you have any escapes, then either the team didnt do their job right, BETA Testing wasnt used or extensive enough, the internal/publisher QA was not rigerous enough, or something changed that they didnt have control of. (eg Drivers for New HW, although Devs are now working a lot tighter with AMD and NVIDIA).

How can this happen?

Simply because games are produced to a schedule and budget where the design principles and verification/validation are commercially structured to make a profit. Sure they could introduce the principles used in say Aviation where flight saftey is a critical issue, but what would that do to the cost of a game? Take RTCA DO-178B, its a necessary and appropriate standard but add 6 to 7 figures to even simple SW developments...

The industry trend is to invest in the next title more than supporting the "current one"...
Which is a shame...

The last patch for the original Far Cry was released in Apr 2006, 25 months after release.
Ubisoft Provided, Community Managed, PC Servers were still available after 30 months.

The last patch for FC2 came 8 months after release

I am sure UBI will have a figure in place for post release support.
Likewise I am sure that the figure is subject to change should there be any overruns in development.
I am equally sure that you wont hear a £ $ or € stated, nor a fixed number of patches or a confirmed period of support time.

It would be nice to be proved wrong with respect to the last point but...
