Thread: OT: But, WWII Submarine | Forums

This will be my new home for the next 2 months.

Ok, so it's not really going to be the next two months, but I AM going to be staying overnight IN the submarine on Saturday. We will have access to the conning tower and other areas not normally allowed to on the standard tour.

I am totally jazzed for this adventure. I went to see the U505 in Chicago a few weeks ago, and while it was a good tour, it just wasn't the same as being inside a US sub. The US subs have a distinct smell that I absolutely LOVE!! The German boat was missing that, and it was a disappointment.

So, does anyone have any picture requests for me?

    AWESOME!

Yes, please give us a tour with your camerea - I'm especially interested in equipment, radios, sonar, radar, gadgets etc. And all over the conning tower!

    Lucky you!

Which boat is that? The Cod, Pampanito?

That is the USS ***** in Manitowoc, WI. I have visited it many times. I only wish I lived closer so I could volunteer. Actually, it would be cool to live in Manitowoc, especially on one of the streets named after the subs built there. Rasher St. Ray Dr., etc.

That's killer, Chuck. I'm totally jealous.

I'm thinking about driving up north to see the Cod some day. Last time I was in Chicago they were moving the 505 and it wasn't on display...

Chuck, back in early 99, I was riding on a truck with my mom, she delivered to a place directly across the river from the *****. I woke up that morning, opened the curtain to the sleeper, shut it, and reopened it, cause I couldnt believe what I had just seen. I was 17 at the time. Told my mom I'd be right back, and run over there without stopping. Unfortunately, they werent open that day

What a bummer!!! I can imagine your surprise. It's not everyday one opens their curtains and sees a submarine out the window. (unless you happen to live across the street from one....)

Forward torpedo room, and not just a straight on shot looking forward.

What's on the ceiling, walls, floor and looking back through the hatch. A closeup of around the torpedo tube would be nice; again, all around it not just straight on.

If you're small enough or maybe if there's a child handy, hold the video cam whilst being launched from a torpedo tube -- a sort of torpedo-eye-view, as it were.
