Thread: Please Fix the Demo | Forums

  1. #1
I've been interest in this game for a while now, not enought to buy the game especially after SC2. I got the demo of the UK PC Gamer magazine DVD, It installed Fine, but as soon as I start to play it I get the "Splintercell3.exe has caused and error" that so many people are reporting on these forums.

My PC may not be top of the line but its more than enough to run the demo.

    AMD Athlon XP 2400+ (2.0ghz)
    512mb PC2100 RAm
    ATI Radeon 9800pro 128mb
    SB Live 5.1
    Windows XP Pro (SP2)

I am no noob when it comes to keeping my PC is top shape, I regulary scan for viruses, Spyware, defrag etc..

However this demo simply refused to load, so much so that I downloaded the whole demo of Fileplanet which is 603mb and took over an hour and a half on my 1mb line, and which is also a chunk out of my monthly limit download.

It's just really annoying, No other demo's games give me this error.

This is just a guess here, but I can't help but wonder if something related to your sound card isn't the problem. Aside from that, your specs are almost identical to mine. I'm running an Athlon XP 2000+, I've got 768 megs of PC2100, and a 128 meg 9800 Pro, but I have an Audigy 2 sound card instead of the SB Live! you have. I've seen a number of the more recent games have issues with the Live! series cards, so it may be that causing your problem.

If that is the case, Start>Run Type "dxdiag" (no quotes) and hit enter.

Wait for the progress bar in the bottom left corner to count up. While you're on the firt tab "System" check what DirectX vesion you are running. It should be DirectX 9.0c. If that checks out, click on the Sound tab. Around the middle of this display, you'll see a slider. "Hardware Sound Acceleration Level:" it should be defaulted to Full acceleration. (all the way to the right). Drag it down just ONE tick, to "Standard acceleration" (text above the slider will change). Then just click exit and try running the demo again.

FYI, this will reset everytime you restart your computer, if it does work. Good luck.

Quillan, your theory is false bc I have a SB Audigy 2 zs and I still get that message randomly.

I already tried that and it still doesn't work, strange I've never had problems with my soundcard before, It's old I know but if doom2, Halflife2, farcry etc.. all work without problems it can't really be the card.

My contention is that it's a bug in the game. People with all sorts of system configs have gotten it.

Well, if it's a bug, then it's an inconsistent bug, because far more people DON'T get it. More likely, it's some conflict between some mysterious hardware or software component that is in each computer having this problem.
