Thread: Off-Topic but regards "Jap" | Forums

Alot of you are suing this slur without even knowing what it means:

The first recorded use of Jap was in 1860 to refer to members of the Japanese embassy in the United States. It was later popularized during World War II to describe those of Japanese descent, and was then commonly used in newspaper headlines to refer to the Japanese and Imperial Japan.

"Jap" was a derogatory term during the war, more so than "Nip." Some in the United States Marine Corps also tried to combine the word "Japs" with "Apes" to create a new description, "Japes", for the Japanese. However, this new word never became popular. Veteran and author Paul Fussell explains the usefulness of the word during the war for creating effective propaganda by saying that "Japs" "was a brisk monosyllable handy for slogans like "Rap the Jap" or "Let's Blast the Jap Clean Off the Map."

thats an old wartime slur and can be very racist for some people so take that into consideration and stop typing that, whats so hard in typing Japaneses? Its only 6 more letters

ITA FRE ENG SPA GER JAP

It's used to short names with only 3 letters.

And this post is useless, and more if we are talking that we want JAP voice actors, because they are better than the english ones.

It's nice to know for general culture, but obviously you won't change people's minds, why? JAP can be considered much more easy to type than Japanese, people don't see it as offensive since they are taking the first three letters of the term (so it cannot be compared with the "N" word since it is not an abbreviation from the word "African American" as it is not the same as calling them "Black" because if it were then you would use a color). Remember that the word JAP is not used much as a coloquiallism other words are prefered and as you said yourself the word was used more as a military or marine corps, as such you can't actually call them ignorants (well, actually yes, you can but it is not appropiate due to the situation). The word JPN is shortened from the word Japan so people prefer JAP instead of JPN or JPNese (you just reduced it by 2 letters so it wouldn't make sence). Now, i am not saying i don't understand what you say, which i do (Japanese from now on it is) but i am just trying to explain to you that only some will actually care or put attention to the info in this topic...Thank you come again
