OK...So it's the Holy Grail of all in the Silent Service...!!!...Sink the Yamato...!!!
Well...I got my chance a few nights ago, but must confess, it was a bit of a let down...It went down without a whimper....

This is all I could capture with the camera...No earthshaking explosions, no cold, sweaty hands...Just a wisp of smoke slowly drifting away and a bushel-full of life boats where she went down...And a flat top that was running with her that sailed right across the mass of lifeboats...

    Here's how it came about...

Spotted it while patrolling the waters just southwesterly of Truk on 8/08/42. I set up an intercept course and let loose a salvo of 6 torps broadside...All on target, and she slowly came to a halt.
I'm thinking it's going to be like shooting fish in a barrel...As I ready another salvo, she starts up again, although doing only about 6 k's. I recall just then reading that the bow and stern were not as well armored as the flanks, so I set up another shot, this time letting loose 3 torps as her bow crosses the hairline, and another 3 aft of the rear guns...All on target except for the last fish that went just off the stern. Now it begins to list badly to port, so I go topside with the camera and am just able to see the smoke drifting away.

And this is the rest of the story...

Hopefully, when I run into her again, it'll be a more spectacular "light show"...!!

    Congratulations on the kill.
My condolences on the anticlimactic finale.

Yeah, I was a little disappointed with my first Yamato. I put 10 fish into it. It just settled into the water with a small fire burning on the bow.

I think you need to hit them under the turrets to get them to blow.

Playing since 2007 and I still haven't come across the old girl! Good shooting, mate! Shame it was a bit of an anti-climax.

I'd love to find her though. I know there are certain places/ports where I could maximise my chances of coming across the big Y, but I like to play as realistically (in attitude) as I can. I figured that few/no captains will have set off with the explicit intention of sinking the Yamato, so I follow orders and sink traffic enountered on-route to objectives. Or respond to flash traffic regarding TF's. Still no Yamato!

If you are playing with RSRD, before several major engagements you'll receive radio messages about TF sightings. If you have completed a mission in the vicinity, it would be perfectly reasonable to respond. Also, don't forget that the Dace and the Darter ambushed Kurita's group in the Palawan Passage and sank his flagship. Subs played an important role.

You should do what I do. I nearly always try to spot enemy TF's and report to HQ. Do the same and then take your guidance from whatever response you get from HQ. Sometimes, the mission will be to attack. Other times you will be ordered to break off contact and either continue patrolling or return to base. Imagine having the Yamato in your sights and being ordered not to engage. What do you do?

I engage...Be nice if the game awarded you for decent renown for not attacking, but getting the types and numbers of ships and reporting.
Often subs were told not to engage and just shadow and get course and ships.

I've become a big fan of the Palawan. It's a major convoy and TF route. In 44 busy all year, but with RSRD busy all war. Maybe it'll keep me away from Formosa and I'll live.

I have been playing since the game first came out - still to run into the Yamato - now playing with TMO but not RSRD. Maybe I should install that as well.

I haven't seen the Yamato in the campaign game yet. I hunt her in one of the guick games.

I'm like tenakhan_1981. For the most part, I follow the orders given to me. My one major exception was my raid on the west coast during the the U-boat campaign.

I also try to treat this game as a strategic game instead of a first person shooter game. To me, a hole in a ship that sails away is still a win. Part of the cargo is ruined, the ship does not arrive in port on schedule, and it is taken out of action for a while while it is repaired.

For shooters, the prize is a Yamato. For me, it is a harbor queen, for three reasons.
    1. It may be hard to get to them, but they are easy to hit.
    2. When sunk at a pier, it reduces the ports capacity to keep cargo moving.
    3. It would pull troops off their main jobs in order to either re-float the ship, or cut it up and remove it.

If I see a task force, and I don't have enough torpedoes to sink a capitol ship, I go after the tankers. In reality, you sink the fuel and the task force has to turn back.
