Can you get unit experience from just being in a battle or do you have to kill hostiles?

I'm not sure, but they defiantly receive a lot more for fighting/securing uplinks/whatever.

Use the drones and it will rank up.

I cant use drones until I get to hardened level.

they gain experience by battles fought as well

In addition to battles fought, Command Vehicles get experience from drone, UAV and airstrike incapacitations. *EDITED*

Hmm that probaly explains why my CV jumped up to elite in a couple days. Love my airstrikes.

nice... mine is veteran thanks to gunship spammers and upgraded drones (lol mini rocket spam vs gunships = many dead gunships)

also sicnce this is a tread on unit exp, your battalion 's units rank in total counts torward your personal rank, i found this out when i lost 2 hardened units and a veteran unit and ranked down from 8 to 7 i got it back after a battle that promoted a few units

Yep, most people don't even notice the drones or recognize them as a threat til the helis shields are down.
On that note tho today I saw my first euro drones upclose and personal form a my riflemen unit shooting at them. Stupid little thing looks like a remote control car with a frying pan sticking up out of it. US drones get rocket launchers



Since airstrikes count towards the CV then would WMD kills as well? Or Force recon damage?(probaly not because it's allied units making the kills but...)
