The Salvatore Todaro, a german made type 212 uboat with hydrogen-oxygen fuel cells is the first italian submarine to dock in a u.s navy port since ww2.
The Todaro will join a multi-national naval exercise in the Atlantic.

Actually the type 214 was supposed to be the export sub and the 212 wasnt.
Nonetheless ,Italy bought two of them in 2003 and 2004 (The Salvatore Todaro and Scire) and just ordered two additional ones which will be delivered in 2013/14.
Dont know if these will be 212-A's too.
U-35 and U-36 will be 212-B's which will be one and a half meter longer and will have a modified conning tower with airlock for special forces. (So they dont have to go out the torpedo tubes anymore and can take more equipment with them)
Its still uncertain if they will recieve the "Triple M" mast with 30 mm autocannon and UAV launcher
That would be a cool feature. And certain pirates would get the shock of their lifetime
Imagine you are a somali pirate going for a lonely juicy freighter and suddenly a strange periscope like thing comes out of the water and delivers 300 30mm rounds per minute.
Thats the gun they plan to adopt for submarine usage at periscope depth

That is one cool submarine, sorry, u-boat. That 30mm cannon: is it fixed to the periscope or does it have it's own mounting? How much renown does it cost? It's the perfect answer to those pesky armed trawlers & Elco's - too small for a torpedo but too much trouble for the deck gun. If I put my name down now, can I have one in 1944 please?
The RN had a go at this technology back in 1918:
HM Submarine M-1 was equipped with a 12" gun that could be fired, but not reloaded, while at periscope depth. I imagine it couldn't be reloaded because all the crew were concussed!

HM Submarine M2, lost by accident in Lyme Bay, January 1932:
When navy divers inspected the wreck shortly after the sinking, they found most of the hatches were open and the hangar door was also partly open. The enquiry concluded that premature opening of the hangar door when surfacing caused catasrophic flooding and the loss of the boat. The other open hatches were explained as the last-ditch attempts by the crew to get out.
