Good deal mate, but what is a 'rebate' and why is it so popular in the USA?

We never hear of that kind of thing accross the pond, you pay your price and get your goods.

Whats the benefit to the co, company to offer these 'rebates', is it the same as effectively 'lending' the company some money for a few weeks?

The company is hoping that some people will forget to send in the required rebate forms. If so, then they save some money.

It is pretty dumb. But also easy to forget to send in.

What some companies are now doing (AT&T) are sending a "debit card" instead of a check. They aren't easy to use and it is easy to "forget" to spend the money. I lost $25 that way because some retailers could not figure out how to use the darn thing.

    Beware of AT&T rebates!!

AJ is correct, they make it somewhat complicated to send in these rebates and if you don't do it just right they can deny it. I try to avoid rebates unless I was going to purchase that product at that time from that merchant anyway, then I'll send them in.

Rebates are a sales/marketing ploy for reasons stated above.
However, they make good deals for those follow through on them.
