Hello:
I purchased the download version of Chessmaster 11 and the program runs fine. However, I selected "help:contents" and the game told me the Adobe application wasn't there. I assume this is the manual. I answered yes to a question on whether to install it and it asked me to insert the disc, which I don't have. How can I remedy this and get the manual?

You already have the manual -- you just need Adobe Reader in order to view it. Here's the link:

I do have Adobe Reader, version 9. It opens all the time when I click on pdf documents. Chessmaster doesn't seem to know its there.

I see the manual in the chessmaster folder on my computer, but the game will not launch it when I select "help/contents."

Well, it sounds like you need to re-install Adobe Reader, under the same Administrator account that you installed Chessmaster under.

You can also open the file directly from Reader:

C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Chessmaster Grandmaster Edition\Chessmaster® Grandmaster Edition Manual.pdf
