I have a mobo which does not have the newer PCI express 2.0 slots, only 1.1 X 16. Will the newer cards work in the older slots? Is it a big waste to do so?

I did that once, convinced a friend to buy a PCI card for his Intel mobo. Card was 2.0 and mobo was 1.1...didn't work. When card was inserted, we got no display whatsoever, neither from the card nor from the onboard graphics, not even a VGA display.
One thing I'm not understanding is why are there warnings in the ads for 2.0 cards saying that they will not run in a 1.1 slot?? Seems to me there are a lot of people with PCIe 1.1 X 16 slots that want to upgrade.
EDIT: I meant to ask why there are NO warnings in the ads.
My PCI-E card is 2.0
My boards PCI-E slot is not (no problem here).

Oops, my mistake mortoma! I was reading PCI, and you actually wrote PCI-Express. Sorry!
PCI-E 2.0 is 1000% backwards compatible in both directions. If it didn't work there was another problem.

PCI-E 2.0 will work in a PCI-E 1.1 slot.
With PCI-E 1.0 it wont work or atleast it wont work correctly with the card performing much less than its supost to be.
Keep in mind that there are PCI-E 1.1 SLI Motherboards out there that switch to PCI-E 1.0 wen 2 cards are fitted.

How much of the performance ya thing one gets from a 2.0 card in a 1.1 slot? Anybody??
Wouldnt be really a noticable difrence between 1.1 and 2.0 slots.
It runs perfectly fine here on my own rig.
Only difrences ive seen in performance between PCI-E 1.1 and PCI-E 2.0 MoBo's where much more likly due to the newer chipsets used like AMD 790X and NForce 780i chipsets versus the older chipsets.
Even seen some of those new MoBo's perform less good than some of the older ones.
So dont worry about difrences in performance, if there are any its really small and shouldnt be noticable.
