The 72-year-old who has long drawn laughs for his wisecracks and deadpan observations will receive the nation's foremost humor prize Monday at the Kennedy Center in Washington. Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock, Sinbad and other top entertainers will line up to honor him with the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.

It's a prize Cosby has turned down twice before because he said he was disgusted with profanity and N-words thrown around by performers honoring Richard Pryor, who was the first recipient in 1998.

"I told them flat out no because I will not be used, nor will Mark Twain be used, in that way," he told The Associated Press from his home in New York.

The profanity bugs Cosby. He always kept it clean with the family laughs on "The Cosby Show," portraying a middle-class black family and everyday life, from 1984 to 1992. And he's not impressed with today's comedians who can't help but curse.

    AMEN TO THAT!

Now I'm not that old, well older then most here yet nothing, and I mean nothing puts me off more then when a comedian, or any person for that matter utilizes curse words as their primary adverbs and adjectives.

To be frank it shows many things. A desperate need to seem impressive (via a 14 year olds mentality), to seem tough (odd, toughest people I have ever met far exceeding what most think is tough never curse or even yell for that matter), to seem cute/clever/hip whatever.

It is as though those that utilize such words as in most cases they do so to an excessive degree, that they're desperate to tell the world, "I'm an ignoramous who has no class or style, am small in character and vocabulary, most of all am so dim-witted I want to inform the world of it".

As to comedians, I remember how much I liked Eddie Murphy in his movies, then I saw his stand up routine.....What a turn off. Same for many others, as though by being vulgar and crude, they could make up for their lack of talent.........Now I've heard all the excuses, yet to be frank I've heard the same jokes said without hte vulgarities and a touch of class, and they come off 1,000x funier....Heck Rita Ruddner's (sp?) stand up is hilarious, the jokes exactly the same about very depraved sex, violence, on and on....and yet she'll not curse once.

Now don't get me wrong, I've heard folks flip out an F-bomb which you never hear from them at just the right moment, and it's perfect, fits, adds impact and does all that those that use them constantly hope for. The trick being though it's not every other word, or every millionth for that matter.

It stuns me how so many simply do not get it......as those with the most power, control, authority, and confidence in themselves and their abilities never curse.

Again Bill Cosby sets a good example on how to be....Kudo's to him.

Whilst not denying that profanity is often used on t.v. just for shock effect, hippness or whatever, you cannot deny it's place in language, how far do we go with censorship.

In the U.K. we have the supposed 9pm watershed, to protect younger viewers, but with youtube this fails completely.

I feel that it has its uses, but the more it's over used, the less impact it has.

I can accept a little profanity, but understand if it upsets some.

I can't accept the opressive controlling parental figure he presents in the Cosby show...laughs or no laughs.

I don't mind some profanity, but most "comedians" these days overdo it. They need to take a look at the Marx Brothers and entertainers of that era. They could (and still can) get you to laugh just with word plays, scenarios, and good writing.

Bill Cosby is a class individual, and I applaud him for holding many in the African American community to a higher standard.

Harpo didn't need writing and he still made me laugh.

There are stars in the world whose flame will eventually be extinguished. When Bill leaves this planet I'll be quite saddened. I can't think of another entertainer that's been 'interwoven' with the fabric of American life.

From his comedy albums, Fat Albert, Jello - Pudding, I Spy, Cosby show, his classic funnier than Carson Tonight Show stints, and now his stance on race (all races would do well to take heed of Bill's words) - He's done it all with class and dignity.

there are TWO 'oldest professions' on earth...

    the other one is comedy

...and like the better known one - it comes in many classes, and in both cases the price tag usually has less to do with the quality of the product than the character of the performer.

people need to laugh, its healthy - Bill Cosby is funny, Dave Chappelle is funny - they are both extremely thoughtful in the process.

Harpo Marx was an incredible performer - hilarious without speaking at all...extremely thoughtful in the process

Some comedians are less equipped - and compensate with invective and resentment laced with profanity for punctuation...remember the former Jerry Seinfeld show cast member and his infamous stand-up act??

Jim Carey and Robin Williams among others have said that some comedians -not comedy, but the performers themselves - work from a dark place.

Some comedians do not, and I think it is fairly easy to tell the difference.

I dont care if the feckers swear...as long as they are truly funny.

    "Enter, the Sandman...."

That's just an opinion, though. It seems to me that you're so hung up on language that the words used are more important to you than the idea expressed.

Words are just words. I don't see why people get angry about them. I couldn't care less if a comic swears in a routine--funny is funny.

Not really, you all I can assure you have little concept of vulgar speech, as sadly I don't come from the highest rungs of society.

It boils down to knowing a time and place and having the self control to not make it a constant thing.....and sadly many of our youth in a day and age when we've tried not to repress a childs experssing of themselves (speech) instead ended up teaching them lack of restraint and class.

To that end we see it more and more often.....Worst of all in all the places it has no place, as many believe such words add weight to what they're trying to say.

Fact of the matter is it's exactly the opposite. A lesson many need to learn, and Cosby a teacher through example.

I don't disagree with any of that. I simply disagree with the assertion that the inclusion of harsh language automatically makes a statement unfunny.
