Just a question. I have noticed that the majority of skins out there are done for JG54 Grunherz. Why is this? Did they have the most varied paint schemes for their aircraft?

I think that's part of it. But I also think that JG54 were very well documented as well. There are a number of good books on JG54 with tons and tons of colored photos. (I guess some lucky airman got a nice color camera for his birthday from his uncle Von SomethingorOther)

    Just my thoughts

Two Jagdsgeschwaders excelled themselves during WWII when it came to non-standard and "experimental" camouflage shcemes.

The best known is of course JG 54. This unit is very well documented through books, articles and websites. A lot of colour photos were taken as well and their often highly creative and decidedly non-standard camouflage schemes are relatively well documented in books. That's why skins of JG 54 birds appear so often on skinning sites. The fact that some of the Luftwaffe's most prominent aces served with the unit also helps!

The other Geschwader is JG 5 "Eismeer". Sadly, this unit is apparently not so well-known, at least not to the skinning community. The camouflage schemes used by this unit, especially in 1941-43, are some of the most beautiful and creative within the Luftwaffe IMO. They are fairly well documented but recently a lot of new material has surfaced, to be published in a new series of books on the unit by famed author Eric Mombeek.

Some of the schemes used by this unit has to be seen to be beleived. Karls Schulze's F-4 with the fantastic squiggle pattern over dark grey has been done, but there are many other fantastic schemes, espeically with winter camouflage, that have not been done yet.

Some pointers to more info on this unit:

I hope some of the very talented skinners out there will do more JG 5 skins in the future. We need'em!

Well it's just a question of "documentatioN" as mentioned before. A lot of JG54 pilots were particularly "trigger-happy" when it came to their cameras. they also used a lot of non-standard camos which are far more interesting than the x-th remake of the standard RLM camo specifications. Historical facts and details of their service are another matter, though (due to the loss of all war diaries and the death of many formation leaders, such a pity that Günther Rosipal died shortly after working through Trautlofts personal diaries).

JG5 has the problem that they were either sparsely documented, the pilots are rather unknown or the camouflages are very complicated (which is a particular problem with the 109â´s - its mapping is as awful as the one of the Dora-9). I saw a very interesting profile of a II./JG 5 G-2 lately but the mapping would make doing this skin a nightmare so I stay away.

A similar thing goes to JG52 - documents and photos are available but I don't know of any good collection about it. Mr Barbas - chief historian of the JG52 veteran's association - will publish a chronic of II./JG 52 in the near future but since he had big trouble with publishers before it will remain in german only and will be published in a small issue only ...
