Just when I'm pulling the trigger on a new system, this whole amd64 bit deal comes into play. Now i think i may just spend the extra $400 and move up to it. I'd like to wait and let the dust settle but i need to move when the wife's not looking and the check book is fat, so now may be the time. At least within the next month or so.
Problem is,... i had settled on the a NForce2(NF7-S) board with a MCP-T Soundstorm southbridge, now i see no NF3 boards have the equivalent, and in fact, the NF3 boards are not getting the great reviews that the NF2 has gotten. I'm sure they'll work out the bugs in the chipset, but has anyone heard that a nf3 with Soundstorm( or equiv) was coming out? I have not seen any info on that. I'm already risking her wrath by spending 4 or 5 hundred more then i told her i was, and now I'd hate to add a $100 sound card into the mix.

Nforce3 is currently not for gaming. It is instead, a workstation chipset.
To make a better purchasing decsicion, you must wait till Christmas, when the GAMING version of Nforce3 comes out, with 7.1 Soundstorm and "NV Raid" capability.
Me, Im on a Nforce1 and XP1900+ (although XP2600 is coming in the mail to tide me over), and I'm going to wait 6 months for the 90nm, dual channel non ECC memory version of Athalon 64 (Q2 2004). By then, the mobos will be mature, (PCI Express too) and Windows 64 will be out too.
You have to wait! I'm telling you don't jump on the ship too early. Take that money and put it in a safe place for 6 months. If you buy now in 6 months you will be so mad at yourself, and 6 months goes by faster than you think.
What is the current state of your system? Specs?

The current AMD64 stuff isnt that much faster than the athlon, and if you were looking at the socket 940 stuff, that is getting replaced by socket 939 early next year, so that isnt worth getting. If you want the fastest setup you can get right now go with a P4 on the 875Pe chipset, but even for that, you should wait til the end of october if possible when they will be dropped in price.

yea, doing some more reading and i'm reconsidering now. Think maybe I'll wait another month or so. The end of october is no problem, but as xmas nears. The daddy fund loses money to the kids and their toys fund. I mean I love my kids and will give them anything, but hey, daddy needs a few toys too . So what if his are alittle more expensive.
BTW RBJ, if you didn't see it, the FX model is the only one that requires ECC memory now. That's the one built off the Opteron core. The standard AMD64 runs off non-ecc dimms But your right about waiting till the 90nm build comes into play. (and the new nvidia sound too) That makes good sense. Think I'll heed that advice
I still may go ahead and get a nf7-s, the 2500 and a 9800 non pro, although i just read the new 9600XT should out run the 9800. But i've got to do something so i dont feel left out of the new dx9 games. Anyway, the barton and the 9800 seem cheep enough and hopefully will tide me over for another 6 months or more.

The FX requires ECC and the A64 does not, but the A64 can only do single channel (sadsmileyface.rbj)
