Thread: FAR CRY BLUE TEXTURES, FLICKERING, THEN CRASH! UNPLAYABLE, PLEASE HELP. | Forums

  1. #1
Ok, here is my problem, after about a half hour of play textures like leaves, mountains, trees and plants all start flickering with defined black stripes in them, then I get bright blue color overlapping the leaves textures and trees and so on. Then the game freezes, glitches then unfreezes, freezes again then locks up and reboots windows. I have checked my vid card for heat issues and it stays completely cool throughout gameplay. I have looked all over for answers to this issue to no avail. If it helps i went all the way through single play to the volcano level before I started seeing this issue in single play, multi play does the same thing in about a half hour of play. Ive also tried uninstalling the game reinstalling with a fresh patch, no good.

Ive tried about 4 different nvidia drivers and some betas, no good.

ive tried putting all my settings to low and ultra high, doesnt make a difference.

I play in the highest res. and ive tried lower res's. I have noticed that on some occasions it lets me play longer then a half hour before buggin out on me. I just dont understand what my proble is. I have a high end pc imo and I dont really understand what compatability issues I could be having.

I have put the same question on 3dguru.com with no luck yet. Please please please help me. Im very frustrated with this. I work long hours at a very stressful job and shooting people in the head is the best stress reliever yet.

    I have a 3.4 intel processor.
    1 gb corsair ram
    6800 ultra nvidia card
    x2 120 gb hard drives
patch 1.31, as well as an updated driver for my vcard.
    Bios is updated as well.
    Asus p4p800 se mobo
    20.1 lcd flat panel.

Sounds a little like a memory problem. I cannot remember the utility to check your memory at the moment but if you know it then give it a go .
If you cannot think of it then try pulling 1 stick out and testing to see if it happens like that ,if so replace that stick and pull the other 1 out. If it still happens then its probably not your memeory
Found it ,memtest86 ,use google to find it .

Just how have you been checking the temps? You sure they are accurate as heat is the most likely explanation for this.

Have you checked the reason for the reboot in the system log for why your system crashed? That would be useful to know or post a dxdiag ,it is all gibberish to me but some people here can understand them.

P.S. what other games are you playing at the moment and do they work ok on that pc?

I was running far cry in a window and checking my vid card temp while playing.

Also, I play Final Fantasy XI, I played Doom III on Very High settings with no problems also.

I havent checked memory or checked and files to see what is making windows crash. if I can check that I would like to know how and I will post the results when I find out.

A guy posted a while ago that farcry made his pc run much hotter than Doom3 did so that is not neccesarily a good clue.

I do not doubt that you are checking your gpu temp but how ? does your fancy ultra have a thermo built in that you are using?

    Start>run then type %systemroot%\minidump
this will show a folder with the memory dumps of all the times your pc crashed ,they are dmp files and i cant open them myself but someone will post how ,hopefully.
You might want to goto control panel>system>advanced>start up and recovery setting and change it to get a full memory dump.

Anyone reading ,what opens a DMP file?

Another thing to check is slightly underclocking you gpu core ,massive artifacts could be a side effect of this being to high.
Also ,i assume you have SP2 with dx9c and the drivers you tried were around the 66.93-71.xx type.

Yes, those were some of the drivers that I used.

In my vid card control panel I have a temperature setting, that shows my current temp, as well as allows me to set the warning temp for when it gets too hot. That window has a temp guage in it. I couldnt tell you off the top of my head what the shut off temp is, but it never gets close in game. maybe goes up 8 degrees if that while playing. Dont know if my processor is getting too hot though, could that be the problem?

Normally if your cpu overheats your fps drops down to very low levels. What you describe is normally associated with gpu driver problems or heat .

Try the memtest thing first as gpu's can take massive amounts of heat and wouldnt neccesarily lead to a crash.

What psu do you have as well?

Forgive me but I dont know what a PSU is. Power supply is my guess and I bought a 500 watt power supply with my pc, its fairly new, bought it about 4 months ago. Is a memtest difficult? I was reading some of the read me on it and it definetly goes beyond my boundaries of knowledge.

Thought about your problem overnight and i think you should contact your supplier about rma'ing your gfx card. It is a new system that should work perfectly ok but your gpu core is behaving wierdly, even though the temps may look fine a build up of heat seems to be occuring that then causes the graphical errors and then a reboot.

Do not do anything to invalidate your warranty until you have reported the errors to them and see what they say.

P.S. cannot find your post on the guru3d forums ,there are some much smarter guys there than me to help you out

This sounds like heat to me. The graphical glitches narrow it down to vid card heat. But the reboots might be CPU heat. Here are some troubleshooting questions.
Have you overclocked the card at any time in the past? If yes and you went too high, it may be damaged.
Did you install an aftermarket heatsink? If yes, you can remove it and reapply the thermal paste and see if that works.
Download motherboard monitor and run it. You can display the mainboard temps in the taskbar and run Far Cry in a window to monitor temps. Check your BIOS to see if thermal throttling is enabled for the CPU and at what temp.

Ok, all of a sudden my Far Cry is working perfectly and all I did is uninstall my Nero software and the InCd software that came with it. I was reading a FAQ on ubi.com for Far Cry and it says to make sure that you dont have any Virtual Drive software running or sometimes installed at all. So i uninstalled my nero programs and Far Cry ran awesome all night. Played for 4 hours last night, not so much as a flicker. If it comes back I should address these issues ASAP. But what do you think. I dont understand how a program could interfere with the game in this way, is it possible that I just had a lucky night of glitch free play. Should I still contact my Manufacturer?

Im using a cooler master case, i have not added any extra fans and have done NO overclocking. My settings are set at High Quality and my Far cry settings are all set to ultra and very high. I dont get any game lag or slow downs so I have left it at those settings. I will run the heat test anyway just to see how its doing. I suggested extra cooling at the time of purchase but my manufacturer said it wasnt necessary with this build.

Thanks for all your help, im going to run the heat test tonight and see if I just had a cool night and the pc stayed cool.

The thing that bothers me is that this problem did not start until the volcano level in single play. I was playing for 3-4 hours at a time with perfect graphics, then I got to that level and it went to the flickering mess. What im thinking is that I didnt install nero untill then cause I had to burn a music cd for someone and didnt put the two together. Is it possible that they conflicted somehow?
