U-boat VII C model 1/72 Revell, who? | Forums

Hi all,

I have started to build a model form Revell. It's a VII C U-boat U-552 (yep, Erich's boat). Now there's an extensive thread in the German section of this forum about it. Was just wondering if any english speaking collegues had some experience in building this near 1 meter (!) long model or think about doing this?

Ive never built that one but I have bult a Trench Class sub. But it should be easy. Execpt for the paint(If you want to get it historicly corect) And a meter long! Holy **** 3 feet.

I'd wish I could paint like that, historically accurate or not. In the threads there's a repetitive occurrence of features on the sub, early vs late versions etc.

I'm building the 1/72 VIIC Revell now. I also have the real wooden deck - purchased as accessory item, but I haven't gotten to the point of installing it just yet ...

I am just starting on this model myself. It is kind of odd. I recently started playing Silent Hunter III, and this got me interested in building ship models, then I found Revell's U-Boat model, then I purchased an airbrush for painting, ect..... In the end, I now have a second hobby, PC Gaming and Military Modeling.

Anyway, I just started on the model tonight. I have already put together two 1:400 scale U-Boat models for practice. I will be modeling the U-552 in the early years of the war (1940 to be exact). You have the option of modeling the U-69 or U-552 in the early years of the war, or the U-552 and a few other U-Boats in the later years of the war (1943 and beyond). There are differences in the models depending on which UBoat you decide to model. For example, the early year U-Boats have anti-sub net cutters on their hulls, where the later year U-Boats do not. The paint schemes are also a little bit different as well (the U-552 had half of its saddle tank painted with the upper hull color, and the lower half painted with the lower hull color).

I actually found a company in the UK (White Ensign Models) that actually makes very well researched naval paints for many different countries. He actually has a whole line of paint in Kriegsmarine colors, and they are as close as you can get to real U-Boat colors.

By the way, did you notice how the Swastika on the German flag on the U-Boat is fuzzed out on the forum picture you linked too in your original post. You cannot show pictures, or own anything, that has a Swastika on it in Germany. In fact, the flag that you get with the model to put on your U-Boat does not have a Swastika in the white circle of the German flag. The rest of the German flag is there, but there is no Swastika on it. Why? Because the the division of Revell that made this model is known as Revell-Germany. They are out of Germany, and therefore they could not sell something with this image on it.

Talk about postwar revisionist c-r-a-p! Get over the guilt, my German friends, and move on. I understand the sensitivity concerns involved, but for pity's sake, isn't banning a swastika on a model somewhat pathetic?

Its not just that. They cant have a swastika anywhere. At least not publicly. Even if it is for historical accuracy. Any computer game, movie, or anything cannot have a swastika.
It is kind of crazy actually.
