  1. #1
    Hey, Ubisoft, hows it going?

i'm a great fan of your games, espically Ruse, i loved every moment of it, i myself am a heavy gamer having played most of the first person shooter games.

I have just finished off Assassins Creed Brother Hood, and the story line is magnificent.

I was just wondering if i could be a game tester for you guys try out the game and give feed back on it?

Plz give me you suggestions on this matter.

    Thanks Pooman96

If by testing you mean to beta test, these are organised on a game by game basis so the best thing to do is keep an eye on upcoming releases for games you enjoy playing. Methods of accessing this sort of beta change from one game to another but any information on upcoming beta tests is usually available via the forums so you can apply when they're available.

For a position as an internal tester you would need to check out the careers page and apply for any such positions as and when they come up. You can find the careers page via Ubi.com

If you just want to be in a public beta test program, keep an eye on the sites for the upcoming games you're interested in for beta programs and instructions on how to be involved.

If you want to do it professionally, keep your eye on the Ubisoft Careers Page and similar pages for other publishers for job openings in your region.

Whichever way you go, be warned that game testing is a lot less fun than you think. Games in beta are almost always at least partly broken and as part of the testing you may be asked to do the same action on the same level over and over again under all sorts of different circumstances. Game testers are required to test specific game functions, not play the game.

Before you read this, bare in mind I'm not trying to put anyone off chasing their dreams or anything, just offering friendly advice from my own experience and putting a bit of truth to what some people don't think of before going for it (like myself) And also, I'm not an employee at ANY studios or Ubisoft so these are my opinions and experiences I've read / heard.

Quality Assurance / Control is a lot more than simply "playing" games or just sitting down testing them. Most people make the mistake of going down that route simply because they want to play the games before they come out and do what they love all day long.

Touching on what Tully mentioned above, take Assassin's Creed for instance.. if you were testing that, your job wouldn't be to simply get the disc, put it in and go play the game start to finish and let them know what you think. There's so much more to it.. You'll be given a horribly buggy un-tested build of the game (possibly with placeholders and visually a croc of... you know), and you'll be instructed to play one portion of that game. Now, you'll play that portion of the game for weeks, maybe months. Every day, you'll have to debug it, rip the code apart and present your findings to the relevant dev team (Art, Sound, Level, Design) and explain why you think that's the problem. Most developers won't take this lightly, and will think you're nitpicking at their work, which you can understand.. after all, who wants some kid coming back and telling them their hard work looks bad? We're all human.

Along with this, you've got "crunch time", which is the months leading up to a games release where the studio will have you testing EVERYTHING as much as humanly possible, and working longer hours than normal (some of which you may not get paid for)

Top all this off with the fact that you'll be under a heavy NDA, and won't be able to discuss anything with anyone, and being caught doing so can ruin any career aspects you may have had.

Oh also, don't forget, Ubisoft is one of the top 5 studios to work for in the industry in the world, if not the biggest now. Since the announcment of things like Watch_Dogs, Assassin's Creed III, Splinter Cell, Ghost Recon, Just Dance, Rabbids, Rayman, ZombiU. People travel from all over the world to work for them at their many studios, and most of these people have already gained experience at smaller studios first.

Now I'm only writing this based on experiences I've been told from a few different friends. Sorry for the totally negative post here, but like I said, I went chasing the same dream, only to find this is how it really is. Of course, I haven't put any of the positives above. Some of them include the experience of working for a games studio and alongside big names, seeing the games early, seeing how it all happens, getting paid to (even though it's a grind) play games.

Just incase anyone was wondering, the average salary in the UK for a QA Tester is ROUGHLY about £17,000 p/year (maybe more or less dependant on who you work for), and you will need relevant qualifications from University.

Hope this has been informative and not put too many people off going for that all amazing job that we all wished for as a kid! Good luck to anyone trying to get into it!!
