Thread: Sonar on IXD2 | Forums

  1. #1
I've been having trouble with the S-Gerat Sonar in SH3. I first noticed it when I edited my career files to increase my renown and switch to an IXD2. When I started a patrol with the new boat, the sonar array somehow managed to destroy itself. I deleted my career and started a new one, this time increasing my renown right after the first patrol. I bought the sonar array before the patrol, but it didn't show up during the patrol. I couldn't see it in the u-boat layout window, and I couldn't activate it either.

I don't know if this is normal, but the 1943 IXD2's in the single missions don't have sonars either.

So here's my question: are we actually supposed to see the sonar's status on the u-boat's layout window, or does it only pop up when it's destroyed?

    I think that's a bug with the IXD2.
I can't remember the exact problem but i know there's a sub that gets it's sonar destroyed as soon as you start a mission, sounds like it.
Wether it is only if you start in a certain port or not i don't know, nor do i remember wether it can be fixed. There may well be a fix or mod about which i'm sure someone will soon tell you about.

All i can do for you i'm afraid

I'm not completely certain, but I believe this is corrected with in the GWX supermod (different sonar model for the IXD-2).

I'm really interested, because the IXD-2 is my preferred variant of the Type IX boats (my favorite U-Boat type).

Isn't there a patch that fixes the sonar issue? I'd rather not install the supermod just to fix this one problem.

Also, if you guys are also having the same problem, are you telling me that none of you guys use sonars in the IXD2?

I always get "sonar destroyed" message right in the beginning. Don't worry, it works just fine. Either tell your sonar guy to get precise range, or use the wheel, aim at a ship and press "ping" button. It works

    I can manage that.

Oh, and I have one last question. What exactly does sonar do? I thought we were supposed to use hydrophones to detect ships while submerged.

Sonar sends out a ping which bounces off solid objects such as ships/subs.
The time between the ping being sent and it returning is used to calculate the distance to the object which is an eaiser and more accurate way to find target range.
More accurate ranging makes for less mistakes in torpedo solutions.
    That's basically it.

Look on the net and you should be able to find sites with diagrams and better explanations.

I'm not at that stage yet. I always let someone else do the solutions, and if they're wrong, they get a slap.

I think I can manage with just a hydrophone for now.

Once you are more comfortable, I highly encourage to upgrade realism. I play at 92%, only external view for taking screens. It is SO much more immersive. And that's when you need sonar.

1)Bad weather and wavy action will sway your scope, making range approximation challenging

2)In a convoy situation, you do NOT want to keep scope up for 5-10 seconds to get range.

With sonar, you can get range with scope underwater, then pop it up, fire and go down again Just advice for the future
