Thread: Uru noob questions | Forums

I'm a big fan of the myst games but I don't usually bye them right away due to the fact that they are expensive and in my opinion they do not have much replay value. That is untill I saw myst Uru. It seams to be a bit more involved but other then that the internet facts are very very scarce. I can't find any more information about this game then thats its a myst game and its great. Something also about multiplayer too. How do you make a puzzle game multiplayer? Nowhere does it explain this. Anyways I was wondering if someone here could clear things up. Apart from Uru being third person how is it different from the other myst games? What is the multiplayer? What makes multiplayer more then just people solving puzzles in the same area? Does multiplayer cost anything extra? If so how much? And pretty much anything else of interest besides what is found on the official website (which includes screenshots and assurances that it is a good game). Thank you.

Uru was originally meant to be a completely online, multi-player experience, with new plot, puzzles and content added continually.

Yes, even puzzles... some that would have to be solved with the help of another player (or players).

There was a decision made to build a single-player adventure into the software and then give people the option of signing up for a continuing Live, online game.

The single-player game was shipped with much of the online content and architecture already built into it. An open beta test began in which people were able to experience the Live aspect of Uru a few months prior to the actual "beginning" of the Uru story.

It was cancelled before it ever began. Apparently, not enough people had signed up to make Live financially viable.

So, much of the online content was converted into two expansion packs, the first available free for download... to help ease the sting of the loss of the Live component. The second was released a few months later and priced at about $20.

So, game released -- Nov. 2003. Beta test "Prologue" begins. Uru: Live slated for Feb. release. Feb. 2004 -- Live is cancelled before it begins. March 2004 -- Expansion Pack 1 is released -- "To D'ni" contained much of the content available to the Live Prologue subscribers packaged into a single-player continuation of Uru:Ages Beyond Myst. The second expansion pack was released near the end of June/beginning of July... "The Path of the Shell" added some new ages and mysteries and a new quest to the single-player game.

August 2004 -- Cyan began allowing fan run servers and Live returns... sort of. It's called Until Uru and has no new content... It looks a lot like the beta Prologue did and is about as buggy. For a one-time cost of $5.95, you can get an authentication code from Cyan and log onto any of the fan-run servers and play online with friends. There is a patch available that will make your Uru game compatible with the servers. For now, none of the Path of the Shell content is compatible. There is one patch for Uru:Ages Beyond Myst and another available for Uru:Complete Chronicles.

    Whew.

    (Takes deep breath.)

Thank you. So basicly Uru live failed and officially it is gone untill further notice. Other then that I'm assuming the game is just like the demo. I think I have all I need to know. Thanks again.

I wouldn't exactly call it a demo and with "Until URU" you get everything that you would have gotten in URU Live, except new ages to explore - and for a lot less. It's still a nice game if you prefer solving puzzles by yourself, but just imagine having a friend there with you to give you moral support, or help you solve the puzzle, or cheer for you when you arrive at a difficult solution without any help. You really don't know what you're missing.

Thanks again.

You seem to have picked up the misconception that the single player Uru game is just the demo (the cleft).

In actual fact, "Ages Beyond Myst", the Single player version, is a complete adventure, with 6 main ages and a few other areas. Then theres a free expansion, "To D'ni" which adds some humongous new areas, and allows you to finally explore the fabled D'ni city. Finally, the 2nd expansion "Path of the Shell" adds 3 brand new ages. All in all, the single player version is a tremendous game, easily bigger than the other games.
You can purchase them all in a set called "The Complete Chronicles".

Then theres the multiplayer mode, "Until Uru", which is pretty much unsupported, but its almost free ($6 upfront, once ever payment). And it basically allows you to explore Ages Beyond Myst and To D'ni with everyone else.

So Uru is far more than a demo. I suggest you do check out the demo to see if you like it, then buy CC (Complete Chronicles).

If you want to know more, my Uru site has several pages of information about all of the various Uru games. See the link below (EMS' Relto).

Now I've just seen enough about this "Until Uru" talk, but not one link or site or tab where i can download it... I've never seen it in any stores and know they shouldn't because uru was supposed to have multyplayer already... but where the hell can I get it?? is it supposed to be found during the playing of one of the expansion packs? i do not know. What i DO know is that I REALLY want to find out more about this "Until Uru" (and is it freely playable? without a monthly payment?)
