    Hey people

I am kind off new to Heroes all together. My eyes dropped on this game because i saw the nice graphics and i thought turnbased couldnt be that bad anyway (i played Jagged alliance and fallout like mad! )

So now i checked this game and im hooked. But i do not quiete understand the mechanics since i play the demo only.
Its like sometimes when i have my archangle on the field with a number 29 at its feet some archdevil with number 10 at its feet 1shots my angel .

So i would like to know the basics of Homm. Firstly what do those numbers at the toons feet mean? When i rightclick i get a data sheet on my heroes, describing their attack, defense and what not. How do these stats effect their combat effectiveness? plz help, i wanna get better at this game online

Those Numbers at the feet are how many cheatures there is in that stack...
so if it says 29 under the archdevils it means that there is 29 archdevils..

First of all, Welcome to the Heroes of Might and Magic forum

About the numbers near each creature - it means how many creatures are in this group. You see, every group of creatures is represented by a single creature portrait on the battlefield. When you see Archangel with 10 number near them it means you have 10 Archangels.

Some basic information you should know about the creature's stats:

Damage - when attacking, the creature deals a random ammount of damage between the creature's maximum damage and minimum damage. That damage is muliplied by the number of creatures in the group. For example, a group of 30 creatures with damage 2-4 will deal damage between 60 and 120.

Attack - a creature's attack increases the damage dealt by him. This status gets higher when the heroe who's controlling this creature has his "Attack" status increased.

Defense - a creature's defense decreases the damage dealt to him. This status gets higher when the heroe who's controlling this creature has his "Defense" status increased.

Initiative - a creature's initiative make it turns come faster. That means that a creature with 12 initiative will act more often than a creature with 6 initiative.

speed - a creature's speed determines the number of squares it can walk during battles. Walking diognaly requires 1.5 points, while the normal movements (straight left right forward or backwards) require only 1. So a creature with 6 speed can move 6 squares straight or 4 squares diognaly.

Health Points - a creature's HP is the ammount of damage that requires to be dealt to this creature in order to kill one creature from the group. When damage is being dealt and a creature from the group is being killed the rest of the damage is dealt to the next creature. For example, a group of 53 creature with 35 HP each is dealt 512 damage - and then only 39 creatures are left in the group and the first creature has 13 HP left out of 35.

Mana is used by spell casters to use spells during combat

Shots is used to determine how many ranged attacks a ranged creature can use during combat

Most creatures has unique abilities like attacking all enemies arround you or "no retaliation" (retaliation is when you attack a creature and the attacked creature attacks you back as retaliation. Each creature can retaliate only once until its next turn)

And an important thing a creature will only once (unless stated other wise)retaliate to your attack in a turn.So its a good idea to gang up on somebody after you "broke" its retaliatiom.

Second archers deal half damage over ranged and cannot shoot when an enemy is standing beside it.Then they also deal half damage.

Creature with mana can cast spells
Morale is very important but dont worry its hard to get minus morale.Morale helps you act quicker on battlefield.

By the way Healingaura, i like the way you explained it all, really good, buti more question : do some creatures do extra dmg to others by default. I mean , for instance , paladins seem to 1shot those big creaturs often.
Is there some scematic like=> cavalry owns archers or something like that?

    No, not really.

Paladins seem to do a lot of damage to large creatures is because of their special ability, that gives em +10% damage for each square they cover before attacking.

combine that and their speed that allows them to reach enemy big units from their initial position, and that's probably why you see those huge damages.

To sum it up, no, creature strengths' and weaknesses against specific other creatures don't exist , UNLESS STATED IN THEIR SPECIAL ABILITIES.

(example, footman special ability : "Large shield" = reduced damage from arrows. that makes footmen good against archers, but that is a property of the ability "large shield", not the footman itself.

You can find an extensive list of what those abilities do over at www.the-genies-lamp.com
