I failed to dodge an incoming bomb (shot down the plane) and got hit. 2 of my 4 diesels were knocked out (value of 1 on the damage screen). The other 2 were OK - so why couldn't I move? All other propulsion systems were fine. I would have thought that having 2 out of 4 diesels would have left me with some manoeuvering ability, maybe at reduced speed, but no go.

You're not going anywhere fast. Just like loosing your rudder. New career anyone?

Unfortunately, it is one of those annoying glitches in the game that still exist. You're correct, in real life if you had one diesel and one electric motor, you could travel. For some reason, in the game you can have one or more functional diesels and one or more functional electrical motors, but if the combination isn't right, you're not going anywhere.

What happened to skippers that lost propulsion like this in real life? Were they able to call for rescue or anything?

Exact same problem here, took a couple nasty depth charges, upon surfacing both destroyers rammed me and promptly sank. But now, on the list the top 2 diesels and batteries are busted. And it's no go. There ought to be a radio for help function. Or at the very least a "get out and paddle" function.

This I think is not yet a perfect realistic simulator , is still a buggy game

That's an interesting question. Those of you who have read books on the subject, anything you can add? I would hope a good engine-room team would have a good chance of jury-rigging something in most circumstances... shame we can't get that going in the game...

The only instance that I have read on this issue concerned the Archer Fish and it was after the war. They had a serious electrical fire that put all engines off line. The Skipper refused a tow as his brother-in-law owned the harbors tow boats and he did not want to be embarrassed. The engine men were able to get one engine working and rigged the electrical motors to turn one prop. He was able to motor in on his own power. I have not read anything on subs during the war losing all power and requiring a tow. Once again, probably the proud Skipper would not let that happen. Running out of fuel was a big no no I'm sure!

Fleet boats also had a backup engine/gen set - the ****y engine. It was located below decks, between one of the pairs of main engines. The USS Gunnel had to use her's a lot on her first patrol, as her main engines, the infamous H.O.R. diesels, shredded their main drive gears. The ****y allowed her to return to port under her own power.
