Thread: Sharp drops in FPS on a decent system | Forums

  1. #1
Well, here's the story...whenever I get close to any sprites/particle effects (smoke, fire, etc.) my FPS drops sharply, from 50-60, to below 30. It's most noticeable on the MP40.

Also, this is not a BIA specific problem, as it happens in almost all games that I can think of, except for Source-based games.

    Computer specs-
    Intel Pentium 4 3.0Ghz 512k L2 cache, 800Mhz FSB
    Intel D875PBZ Motherboard
ATi Radeon 9800 Pro 128, using the 4.12 Catalyst drivers with the Catalyst Control Center
2GB DDR PC3200 RAM (before you ask, I do a lot of 3D modelling and rendering on the computer, I need the extra RAM to speed up the rendering times and to allow me to do other things while rendering/compiling/whatever)
    Direct v9.0c

    http://home.comcast.net/~mikofam/onl...age/DxDiag.txt
    ^DxDiag file

Also, I have run a Spybot S&D scan and an AdAware scan, came up clean. Also ran a Norton AV scan, came up clean.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I'd also like to add that for some reason now, the game is dropping below and staying below 30 FPS consistantly.

Could really use some help here, running the game in 1280x1024.

if you're going below 20 FPS, then you should just switch to 1024x768. Are you running the game off a clean reboot (no programs in the background, etc)? Congrats that you can run the game!

I have the 9800 pro as well. You need to update your drivers. Yours are very old.

My monitor does not like 1024x768, when I switch to that in a D3D or OpenGL app, all games get VERY dark, and due to the massive decrease in resolution, any game is absolutely hideous. 1024x768 is the only resolution I can think of that I really notice all of the jaggies and that **** at.

    Since when was c r a p considered a bad word?

Your drivers are too old. The latest is 5.3 Updating should only help you.

The site is http://ati.com click on drivers.

Will try that later today, when I get on my main computer. Will report back with the results afterwards.

Upgraded to 5.3 drivers, FPS now stays up near 40-60, however, getting near any type of smoke/dust/steam/mist brings my FPS down below 15.

Still need a response regarding the sharp drop when near smoke/dust/steam particles/sprites.
