This review comes from the Rage 3D boards, everyone's loving it. It serves as a prequal to Pitch Black...

quote:
Here are some of my thoughts about the game (I apologize for any gramatical errors).

Well the game comes on 5 cd's and takes up about 4.4 gigs of hd space. The packaging and cover art is pretty nice. After having played the game for about 30-40 minutes, I can safely say that this game is amazing! Alot of people say that (insert name of game) plays like a movie. Well this one really does, and that's a good thing. The opening level/tutorial was a perfect start to the game, as was the escort into Butcher Bay. That is all I will say about the beginning, I don't want to spoil anything. One thing I will say is that the games story has me hooked.

The graphics are excellent as are the production values. Think Doom 3 but better. I really like the menu cube animations â€" very cool! Textures are pretty good overall, there are some blurry ones here and there but they are few and far between. The atmosphere of the game is very heavy but not to the point of depressing. The outdoor levels have nice atmosphere effects like wind and blowing dirt and sand. The sky boxes are particularly nice, especially the one inside the prison courtyard. Lighting is excellent, especially towards the end of the tutorial mission.

BTW, you can save the game anytime you want (for those wondering). There is also an autosave feature.

The sound is pretty good and it really sets the mood. There is alot of foul language and nasty writings on the prison walls. So you may want to wear headphones while playing. Also of note is the developers commentary (which I have not listened to yet) I think that it plays like a DVD commentary, which means you can listen to it while playing the game. Not sure though...

O.K. lets get to the good part â€" fighting! The game is BRUTAL...did I say it was brutal? The hand-to-hand fighting is of particular note because it is handled very well. You can throw various types of punches with the left mouse button in conjunction with the movement keys. The right mouse button is used to block enemy attacks. You also have weapons like shivs, scalpals, knives, knuckle-dusters, shotguns, assault rifles, etc. Everything has a satisfying feel to it, you can pummel people to death, snap necks, drop from the ceiling onto unsuspecting guards, as well as use the standard assortment of weapons to deal death. Fun for the whole family! One move that I really like is spinning a guards weapon around causing him to blow his brains out. Brutal but effective. Did I mention that the game is very bloody, during fist fights it is not uncommon to see blood splatter on the walls, as well as see bruises on you opponents faces.

The fps camera movement is a little disorienting at first but it really grows on you. When you crouch or look at the ground you can see your body and feet, as well as your shoulders when you move your head from side to side. More fps games need to include this. The HUD is minimal as to not interfere with the visuals. You are given certain colored cues to let you know that you are concealed when sneaking around. The game so far has a good mixture of stealth and balls to the wall action. How to approach things in the game is left up to the player.

Anyway, I highly recommend this game if you like fps games. I think most of you will find it highly entertaining. But some of you won't and that's to be expected. Well those are just my humble opinions...later

And to top it off it sounds like it's selling for $29.95. I'm going to go hunt me down a copy today.

[edit] Fry's has it on sale for $24.99. Will boot it up later

Well I don't know if you liked the movies or not, but if you did you'll dig this game. It has the right feel to it, production values are really good, even has the merc from Pitch Black. It looks almost as good as Doom III but Id say it has much better gameplay.

I love how they put the camera inside a real body. Rid**** is fully rendered at all times, so if you look down you'll see your feet. If you look to the side, you'll eventualy turn your body to line up with your head. It's subtle but really immersive. All FPS's should follow this lead. I only wish there was no nead for a 3'rd person view (happens when you climb something).

    Anyways, good game.

lol, that seeing your own body thing is something me and my friends have always been wondering about for years, it's great to see somebody is actually taking a step and doing it.

Nevertheless, I haven't seen the movie yet... only Pitch Black, which was an amazing movie... I really gotta take the effort and rent it or something.

Everyone is right. The game looks excellent. Defnitely on the Doom3 level. I've only played through the first mission, but its very cool.

$30.....makes you wonder how $30 gets something this good, and $55 gets you,...well...something else.

I actually had to change the shadow level down to 2 from 2++ because it seemed sluggish, but I noticed no difference in appearance, and the game runs great 1280x1024 on a P4 3.2, 2gb ram, 6800 gt. I think it may have something to due with my old 61.76 driver. But the driver works well with all my games, so no need to change it. I hate playing musical drivers.
