Thread: Bogus Microsoft Call... | Forums

Just had a strange call from someone pertaining to be from Microsoft, asking if my computer was running properly...

He said that I might have security issues that might cause harddrive failure and that could I spare a few minutes to run some checks with him to see if it was infected...

He knew my name and postcode, and I said everything was running fine and was happy that there were no threats. I told him I didn't have the time to run checks with him at the moment and could he ring back later, which he said he would do...

Caller display gave me this number 034009054 which is not recognise...

What do you think, bogus caller, or legit MS call...

Yup Archie, i had the same, i just put the phone down on him, we get quite alot of these types of callers, usually a pause before anyone speaks and mostly Indian call centres.

I think i've told this before but a few years ago an Indian chap called, said would i be interested in a Broadband package that was very cheap, i was having trouble with my ISP(still am) so thought i'd let him speak, after he'd delivered his speel i said i may be interested, whats your name and where should i call, he said(in a pigeon English/Indian accent) his name was Tommy Edwards...SPLUTTER!...good job i wasn't drinking anything at the time.

The vid wouldn't work for me, but is this the one where the telemarketer calls the home of a homicide investigation?

    He only bloodwell rang back...

Cheeky git, he started his speel again, Microsoft, internet threats, valued customer, here to help... When I stopped him and said in the intervening couple of hours I had been busy checking things myself, and had turned up some interesting info about his telephone number...

The line suddenly went very dead...

Thanks chaps for the info, I wonder how many hits they get a day?

Choctaw, yep thats the one, brilliant piece, only wish I had thought of doing something like that to this jerk but him being in India probably wouldn't worry him to much.

    Thanks for the help all...

    Archie...

    You got it, Choctaw.

Good way to handle it, Archie.

I finally got an apology and a promise to stop harrasing me from XLN - I had to threaten legal action, once I found out the name of the company. The phonetards had been calling at least twice a day from an Indian call centre and refusing my advice as to where they could insert their offer. 'Bloody annoying' would be an understatement.
