Thread: Bring back hobo Sam Fisher | Forums

I would have preferred the old version of Conviction with Hobo Sam. It didn't have Sarah coming back to life, guards constantly spouting expletives, Persistent Elite Creation, the Grimsdonattir, and the rest of that Hollywood cheese. It was pure Tom Clancy.

At least it would have been truer to the original story and characters
    Ubisoft, please prove me wrong.

It looked like it would come together in a better fashion in terms of story and characters, but it did stray very far from the base formula in my opinion. Personally, the idea of a more open and dynamic fugitive environment is still something that has not been done to this day, and Sam didn't look quite so super-human, or what he became in Conviction.

One thing that seemed to look great at E3 that year was the tech that was fresh and the team seemed to be more or less the older team remnants with Mathieu Ferland (but no Clint Hocking), from SAR and Chaos Theory. Don't quote me on that though.

Anyway, as a fan of Jason Bourne, I did think that the idea of a dynamic fugitive gameplay looked to be something really new and innovative for the franchise, and it may have worked better for the story background in Conviction. Now Sam isn't Bourne, he is a pure infiltration specialist, not a gun-toting killer that the newer build played him to be.

Bottom line: The lack of resources and new Sam may have been great if it were blended with a stealth-based mission structure that provided both means of gameplay in the levels. I think this would have been interesting, especially set in the open areas that were like the Washington Park that was shown in that early build.

    Just my two cents.

I agree. I always thought that the SCC07 build looked good. It was something fresh and new. It worked storyline wise and still kept with the stealth aspect of the game. It was just a different take on it. While I am a fan of the current Conviction, I hated how they changed Sam to be this super human inhumane person that just ran around killing people. The SCC07 build of Sam seemed to be more like the actual Sam Fisher.

What I'm hoping for is that they are saving the '07 build for SC6. Even if it isn't completely like how it was before, I would like aspects of it in SC6 with the social stealth. A mix of current SCC and 07 SCC would be perfect. As long as Sam keeps the hair cut and continues shaving of course.

Actually other then the Sarah thing, I think the storyline was basically the same. Third Echelon was still going to be corrupted, Grimsdottir was still meant to return, Sam was still meant to go to Washington. I agree about the constantly spouting expletives and Persistent Elite Creation points though.

The '07 looked really good, it seemed to be a huge step forward in emergent gameplay, and from some of the press previews I read at the time and screens that I saw, it seemed to have a much more intelligent narrative and the gameplay seemed diverse and varied, with much more interesting features.

The best thing about the 07 version of Conviction was that it was written by Mary DeMarle, the same same person who later wrote Deus Ex Human Revolution. Imagine how much better the story would have been!

I don't know, to be honest I wasn't that disappointed with the storyline. Other then the cheesy Hollywood 'trying to kill the president cause I'm pissed' thing, I thought the storyline was decent. I had more of a problem with how they changed the characters.

In regards to the storyline, I am actually wondering if they saved their storyline idea from SCC07 for SC6 with Sam going back to look into a threat against Grim. The ending of SCC seemed to set up a theme of Sam only getting back into the game for "family" so I could see them using that for the SC6 storyline.

2007 Conviction could have been a fantastic spin off SC.

    - Graphics superior to current Conviction ; especially in terms of lighting and shader materials
    - Gameplay could have beaten any and all 'social stealth' games
    - Hobo Sam Fisher character model still resembles more classic Sam Fisher than current Sam Fisher ; especially
in terms of body proportions and physique.
    - Superior physics and interaction.

Now....what were clearly, the weak-sauce points of Conviction 2007 ?

    - mild repurcussions for causing havoc
    - cops which go at Sam only ONE at a time, NEVER pulling their fire arms.
    - the possibility of reaching a ceiling in terms of gameplay depth ; social stealth gameplay on the streets would have its limitations ; since
street level interaction rarely becomes specific or indepth.

Bottom line : I'm still glad Conviction Insurgency Pack happened, because that's basically the better part of it all. If they use that as blue print for
    SC6, things are looking up.
